J.R.R. Tolkien's own description for the original edition: "If you care for journeys there and back, out of the comfortable Western world, over the edge of the Wild, and home again, and can take an interest in a humble hero (blessed with a little wisdom and a little courage and considerable good luck), here is a record of such a journey and such a traveler. The period is the ancient time between the age of Faerie and the dominion of men, when the famous forest of Mirkwood was still standing, and the mountains were full of danger. In following the path of this humble adventurer, you will learn by the way (as he did) -- if you do not already know all about these things -- much about trolls, goblins, dwarves, and elves, and get some glimpses into the history and politics of a neglected but important period. For Mr. Bilbo Baggins visited various notable persons; conversed with the dragon, Smaug the Magnificent; and was present, rather unwillingly, at the Battle of the Five Armies. This is all the more remarkable, since he was a hobbit. Hobbits have hitherto been passed over in history and legend, perhaps because they as a rule preferred comfort to excitement. But this account, based on his personal memoirs, of the one exciting year in the otherwise quiet life of Mr. Baggins will give you a fair idea of the estimable people now (it is said) becoming rather rare. They do not like noise."

Biography

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on the 3rd January, 1892 at Bloemfontein in the Orange Free State, but at the age of four he and his brother were taken back to England by their mother. After his father's death the family moved to Sarehole, on the south-eastern edge of Birmingham. Tolkien spent a happy childhood in the countryside and his sensibility to the rural landscape can clearly be seen in his writing and his pictures.

His mother died when he was only twelve and both he and his brother were made wards of the local priest and sent to King Edward's School, Birmingham, where Tolkien shine in his classical work. After completing a First in English Language and Literature at Oxford, Tolkien married Edith Bratt. He was also commissioned in the Lancashire Fusiliers and fought in the battle of the Somme. After the war, he obtained a post on the New English Dictionary and began to write the mythological and legendary cycle which he originally called "The Book of Lost Tales" but which eventually became known as The Silmarillion.

In 1920 Tolkien was appointed Reader in English Language at the University of Leeds which was the beginning of a distinguished academic career culminating with his election as Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford. Meanwhile Tolkien wrote for his children and told them the story of The Hobbit. It was his publisher, Stanley Unwin, who asked for a sequel to The Hobbit and gradually Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings, a huge story that took twelve years to complete and which was not published until Tolkien was approaching retirement. After retirement Tolkien and his wife lived near Oxford, but then moved to Bournemouth. Tolkien returned to Oxford after his wife's death in 1971. He died on 2 September 1973 leaving The Silmarillion to be edited for publication by his son, Christopher.

The 5 stars belong to the story ONLY!

The Hobbit as most people know is one of many books that precede The Lord of the Rings trilogy by Tolkien. All of the books from the set are my favorite "Go to" books and I keep many of them on my Nook.
That having been said there is nothing enhanced about this version.
The "artwork" by Micheal Hague could have been drawn by a 3 year old. This artist is the one responsible for the ghastly Tolkien Calendars from the last few years.
If someone at the publishing company wants to enhance this book again get rid of Hague and use Alan Lee or John Howe's paintings and drawings. Those are true fans of the literature and know how to do honor to the literary work.

    Not Compatible with Many Devices

I received this book as a gift. Sadly, it is not compatible with the Nook Simple Touch or the Nook for Android app (even when running on a color Android tablet). It should fail gracefully on all devices, offering, for example, text-only on devices that cannot display color photographs. Pity.

    Recordings are incredible

The enhanced version was definitely worth it. Just to hear J.R.R. Tolkein read passages of The Hobbit was incredible. Buy it.

    Ugh doesnt deserve 1 star.

I hate this book! I hade to read it for my school, its the worst thing. The names are confusing and the story line itselff is terrible.also when i tried reading this last night, it wouldnt work all i got was a black screenn, & a message saying a application in reader isnt working, so i waited for 20 minutes and nothing FIX IT! Needless to say id rather watch paint dry than read this disgrace of a book.

    Wont work on IPad

Would have loved to have this, only it DOESN'T WORK WITH IPAD.

I have run across many items that it is not clear what they will and won't work with, and even if the say it is compatible with apps, still wont work.

B & N is losing customers by only providing certain items to the Nook - if you are going to supply Nook Apps, then ALL items should be compatible!!! You won't force people to buy a Nook, but you will lose sales of Nook books.

    Enhanced edition

(Those reviewers saying that the images are too small, you double click on them to make them larger.)

The Hobbit is one of my favorite books. I read it first when I was 11 and it is great to revisit this great little adventure book. I like the enhanced version with Tolkien's illustrations and especially the sound clips!

I have no complaints with the story itself. My complaint is for Barnes and Noble. I ordered a copy of this book back in October. Upon opening the package the book appeared to be in pristine condition, however, as I am reading it now, I have stumbled upon something that bothers me very much. Parts of pages are missing, ripped away. This shouldn't happen when I am buying a BRAND NEW copy directly from Barnes and Noble.
