God from the Machine: Artificial Intelligence Models of Religious Cognition
'God from the machine' (deus ex machina) refers to an ancient dramatic device where a god was mechanically brought onto the stage to save the hero from a difficult situation. But here, William Sims Bainbridge uses the term in a strikingly different way. Instead of looking to a machine to deliver an already known god, he asks what a computing machine and its simulations might teach us about how religion and religious beliefs come to being. Bainbridge posits the virtual town of Cyburg, population 44,100. Then, using rules for individual and social behavior taken from the social sciences, he models a complex community where residents form groups, learn to trust or distrust each other, and develop religious faith. Bainbridge's straightforward arguments point to many more applications of computer simulation in the study of religion. God from the Machine will serve as an important text in any class with a social scientific approach to religion.

Table of Contents

“Nattie is a one-of-a-kind, living, walking legend who has chosen to share her story of the fight inside and outside of the wrestling ring . . . Nattie’s voice and sense of humor pop off of the page; you will cry through the hard times, clap and cheer through the good; but most importantly you will feel, heal, and learn through the lessons, insight, and stories that show what is truly important in life by defining your own happiness and success. This is more than just a wrestling story.”
—Bianca Belaire, WWE Superstar

“I’ve known and loved Nattie for over twelve years. Not only for her mentorship or how much she’s always looked out for the girls, but because she is one of the greatest storytellers of all time! When Nattie is in story mode, she does not skip a beat, an emotion, or a detail . . . As a longtime wrestling nerd, I think this book has everything and then some. But as a forever Nattie nerd, I promise this book will make you love her even more.”
—Bayley, WWE Superstar

“Reading this book felt like having wine with Nattie on the couch—if that wine came with tears, belly laughs, and a crash course in resilience. I thought I knew everything about her (she’s one of my best friends!), but I found myself laughing, crying, and texting her mid-chapter like, ‘Wait, what?!’ She’s raw, real, hilarious, and truly one of the most badass women I know.”
—Leah Van Dale, former WWE Superstar and influencer

But readers of this funny, poignant, and revealing book will now see what everyone in the wrestling business has known all along: Nattie is none of those things . . . I’m so excited for everyone to finally learn how Nattie took on the incredible task of furthering the Hart legacy, and not only did she succeed in proving herself, she created a whole new generation of fans along the way.
