Even if she were not a seminal figure in the establishment of Buddhist practice in the West, Ruth Denison's story makes compelling reading. As a young girl in Nazi Germany, she endured an eyeopening ordeal, and in the United States during the Sixties, she spent her time with her husband, the eclectic seeker Henry Denison, in the company of such legendary counter culture figures as Alan Watts and Timothy Leary. Having received transmission from the Burmese master U Ba Khin, Denison began her own style of teaching Buddhism, incorporating dance and sensitivity exercises learned from Charlotte Selver and others. Her strong following among women has made her a recognized pioneer teacher of Buddhism to Western women. Boucher (Opening the Lotus) is at her best when she allows Denison's distinctive voice to come through. At other times, her struggle with Denison's personality and methods is a distraction from her subject's fascinating complexity and wisdom.
