About the Author

George Laurence Gomme (1853–1916) was a highly respected British folklorist. He helped found both the Victoria County History and, with his wife Alice Bertha Gomme, the Folklore Society. He was knighted in 1911. He went on to immerse himself in the study of history and folklore, writing books such as Folklore Relics of Early Village Life, Ethnology in Folklore, and The Making of London.
