About the Author

Michael W. Kirkwood, PhD, ABPP, is Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and codirects the Children's Hospital Colorado Concussion Program in Aurora. Dr. Kirkwood is a board member of the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology and has served as President of the Colorado Neuropsychological Society. His research focuses on characterizing and treating the effects of pediatric traumatic brain injury, with a number of current projects focused on understanding persistent problems following concussion. Dr. Kirkwood is the author of more than 25 journal articles and book chapters.

Keith Owen Yeates, PhD, ABPP-CN, is the Ronald and Irene Ward Chair in Pediatric Brain Injury, Professor and Head of the Department of Psychology, and Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics and Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. His influential research focuses on the outcomes of childhood brain disorders, especially traumatic brain injury (TBI). A recently published bibliometric analysis indicates that Dr. Yeates has authored more of the top 100 most-cited papers in pediatric TBI than any other researcher. Dr. Yeates is the inaugural Chair of the Canadian Concussion Network and is Editor-in-Chief of Neuropsychology. He has served as President of the Society for Clinical Neuropsychology (Division 40 of the American Psychological Association) and the International Neuropsychological Society.

Description: Traumatic brain injury has become an impassioned topic in the media, political, and medical worlds. While there is abundant coverage of adult traumatic brain injury in the scientific literature, pediatric traumatic brain injury research is only recently gaining traction. This book covers mild traumatic brain injury during the developmental time period.
Purpose: The intent is to review the current literature on mild traumatic brain injury in children and adolescents and to provide a clinical framework for evaluation and decision-making.
Audience: The book is designed for clinicians involved in the care of children with mild traumatic brain injury, including neuropsychologists, child psychologists, pediatric neurologists, and pediatricians. Team physicians and athletic trainers also may find this valuable. The editors and contributing authors are knowledgeable about the topic and involved in much of the ongoing research in this field.
Features: A thoughtful introduction that targets several keys areas in this field begins the book and provides a tantalizing, yet necessarily brief glimpse of what is to come. The inclusion of animal models of pediatric brain injury is intriguing, but the book neglects to address the poor relationship between some aspects of animal and human studies of concussion in adults, so the results it presents may mislead readers to overinterpret findings. There is redemption in the middle section focused on empirically based outcomes. This section is replete with references from the literature that provide a well-balanced view of the complexities and ongoing controversies in the field, as well as issues that are much more settled by a preponderance of evidence. The inclusion of differential diagnoses is most welcome because clinicians, patients, and parents often become so focused on the trauma that they attribute every symptom to it. Although everyone is drawn to the striking images provided by MRI, the neuroimaging chapter digresses from mild traumatic brain injury and takes many detours into the realm of moderate-severe brain injuries, making it largely irrelevant in this particular book. This disappointing trend continues with a chapter on the assessment of postconcussion syndrome, which details valid measures for evaluating this phenomenon, but fails to recognize that a valid measure to detect a syndrome is not possible when the syndrome itself has no validity or reliability. There is again some redemption in later chapters on interventions, reflecting the balanced and comprehensive review of the current literature seen earlier in the book.
Assessment: This is a functional and expedient review of the literature as it pertains to mild traumatic brain injury in children. Although there are some areas where the book digresses from its intended topic or has incomplete coverage, the majority of the book is excellent, comprehensively covers the current scientific literature, and presents cutting-edge issues in a neutral and factual manner. This is essential reading for clinicians involved in the care of children with mild traumatic brain injury.
