Description: New to this sixth edition of a graduate level pathophysiology book are full color tables and illustrations, new chapters on liver disease and inflammatory rheumatic diseases, a completely revised chapter on male reproductive tract disorders, and newly enhanced end-of-chapter case studies with full answer synopses in the back. Since publication of the previous edition in 2006, the authors have been hard at work updating and revising this book to incorporate the basic science concepts of anatomy, physiology, molecular biology, and pathology and integrate them with the applicable aspects of clinical medicine.
Purpose: The aim of this update is to "provide students with an introduction to clinical medicine through the study of diseases as manifestations of pathophysiology." The authors note that their intent is not to provide a comprehensive book, but an introductory one upon which to build during the clinical years of medical education with the additional understanding of signs and symptoms of disease, culminating in their management and treatment. The authors have done an outstanding job accomplishing these aims. Each chapter begins with the basic ingredients of anatomic and physiologic reviews of the organ system, then moves into the overarching concepts of how these processes may become disorderly. Finally, it describes how students can apply these concepts clinically to the medical diseases they will encounter in their patients on the wards. Each step of the way, students are able to recheck their understanding of the basic concepts and then fully integrate them into the end-of-chapter case studies.
Audience: Although targeted primarily at first or second year graduate students in medicine, the book also could serve as a reference for residents and general practitioners as well as graduate students in physiology and pathology. The editors are practitioners from UCSF and University of Michigan who have published extensively in their fields. Chapter authors, specialists in their respective areas, reference multiple evidence-based resources.
Features: This well-written, organized book explores the pathophysiology of diseases of all the major organ systems. Highlights include well-organized tables, bolded key terms in the text that correlate with the glossary, full-color diagrammatic depictions of physiological principles, and clinical presentations of common diseases. Internal chapter checkpoints closely correlate with the chapter objectives and maintain students' focus on important points.
Assessment: This is a great addition to the ranks of pathophysiology books for graduate students in medicine. It also is useful as a reference while on the wards as a memory jogger for basic anatomy, physiology, and pathology of common diseases. The addition of the full-color diagrammatic illustrations and tables and the expanded case studies make the book aesthetically pleasing and easily navigable. Overall, this is a great book to have on hand for the preclinical years, clinical years, and beyond!
