A failed academic is given a fresh start in life by a rural sheriff. He gets a new marriage and a new career. His story is set against the background of a police procedural as the the sheriff deputies deal with break-ins, domestic disputes, meth labs, and terrorists. He soon learns that policing is as much as matter of politics as it is of crime scene investigation.
