Shock On T
Peter Reilly is a Boston cardiologist who spends much of his time implanting defibrillators and pacemakers. For months, he has been seeing a small-time print model, Mira Ghiloni; Mira, it turns out, is an odd woman who lives in a largely empty apartment and is mysteriously reticent about the circumstances which led her to move from New York to Boston. When she vanishes, Peter goes into a tailspin. He traces her to New York, where she has returned to live with a much older man, a close friend of her deceased father.
In an act which he barely believes himself capable of and which may be almost impossible to trace, Peter kills her. He goes to her funeral, meets her family, her older lover, and her sister Thea. Gradually, he begins a relationship with Thea, a relationship haunted by the image and memories of Mira, by the physical similarities between the two very different sisters, by his own persistent need to confess, and not least by a police investigator whose lingering curiosity leads him to keep the case open. By turns fast-paced and deeply introspective, Shock on T is a meditation on the nature of obsession, sexual love, jealousy, murder, remorse, and self-destruction.
