Donald Fray is a mentally challenged fifth grader whose only protectors from the neighborhood bullies are his mother, whom he lovingly refers to as, "Ma," his brother, Bin, and his sister, Georgie. He's spent his entire childhood being punched, kicked, verbally abused, and chased all around by every kid in the neighborhood, just because he's different, and he can't see why. As his mother calls it, he's "blind." It isn't until an old neighbor, Mr. Oplar, takes him under his wing that he begins to see the world in a way that he's never seen it before.
