THE following chapters contain an extremely condensed summary of some Lectures which formed part of a series given on Sunday evenings during the last three years in a rural parish, in the absence of any service or religious instruction in the afternoon. They are now dedicated to those who listened to them, in gratitude for their earnest attention, and in the hope that such a short Manual of the grounds and claims of our Religion may be of service in recalling what was then more fully discussed. If to any in a wider circle the suggestions here offered (which are only those of reverent thought, unshackled by the tradition of Creeds or theological refinements) should be useful in removing doubts, or confirming faith, their publication will be justified.
