Description: This is a well written book for dental undergraduates and oral and maxillofacial surgery interns. The authors have comprehensively covered a very broad range of topics in a succinct, acceptable format.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive review of the specialty that is frequently incompletely covered, at best, in most graduate dental programs. The author has rightly identified a weakness in many dental programs that choose to focus on restorative dentistry and periodontics and give less attention to the oral and maxillofacial surgeons' purview and breadth of practice. He has admirably accomplished this long overdue task, and compiled a complete overview of the discipline.
Audience: This book is written primarily for dental students and trainees in the early stage of postgraduate training in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The author is well known regionally and internationally.
Features: The basics of the specialty are reviewed, mostly the scope of practice. Individual topics are reviewed in adequate depth for a survey style instruction platform. The chapters are well organized and easy to read. The photos and illustrations are well integrated with the written texts. Appropriate, easy to follow table accentuate the chapters.
Assessment: There are few books written for the intended audience. This one compares favorably with, and is far more comprehensive than, Contemporary Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 4th edition, Peterson et al. (Elsevier, 2003), and covers more recent advances in facial aesthetics, reconstruction, and general knowledge of the discipline. It falls short in that is it a bit too abbreviated for the dentist who will pursue a career in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
