Description: Now in its third edition, this book focuses entirely on liver biopsies and is part of the Biopsy Interpretation Series. The previous edition was published in 2009.
Purpose: The purpose is not to be a comprehensive book on liver pathology, but rather to serve as a practical handbook for the interpretation of liver biopsies. The focus is on the practical and, indeed, this serves as a useful guide to the interpretation of liver biopsy for most hepatic disorders.
Audience: The target audience includes both novice and experienced surgical pathologists who interpret liver biopsies. The author is considered a leading expert in hepatopathology.
Features: Numerous high-quality images and tables fill each chapter. The text, in outline format, is easy to read and provides quick reference for numerous hepatic disorders. Two particularly useful chapters, which were not in previous editions, are the "Almost Normal Liver Biopsy" and "Language of Liver Pathology: Definitions of Key Terms." The different grading and staging systems, in tabular format, are a useful addition to the section on chronic hepatitis.
Assessment: This is a practical, well-organized handbook for the interpretation of the majority of liver biopsies encountered. This welcome addition to the Biopsy Interpretation Series won't sit for long on a pathologist's bookshelf; rather it will become one of the elite few books that sit right next to the microscope for frequent quick reference. As true with the previous editions, this book will soon become well loved with dog-eared pages, highlighting, and a broken spine.
