Abundantly illustrated, it provides an overview of the application of MRI in the evaluation of the joints, including the temporomandibular joints, spine, bone marrow, and musculature. The principles of the available technologies, including opposed-phase echo technique, fast STIR sequence, and muscle spectroscopy, are also discussed. Two of the editors are affiliated with German institutions, and the third is with the U. of California- San Francisco; contributors are mostly from Germany, with a few Americans. Annotation c. Description: This introduction to MR imaging of the spine and joints briefly covers the main diseases of the spine, shoulder, elbow, joints of the hands and feet, hip and pelvis, knees, lower leg, and temporomandibular joint. Cartoon illustrations depict anatomy, physiology, and pathology. An update of the 1999 first edition, this edition adds specific information regarding imaging with 3 Tesla magnets.
Purpose: The book seeks to outline magnetic resonance imaging of the spine, joints, and soft tissues of the musculoskeletal system. As an introduction to MRI imaging of the musculoskeletal system, this book fulfills these objectives and is concise and abbreviated in its explanations.
Audience: Medical students, radiology residents, and practicing general radiologists would find this survey of imaging techniques, anatomy, and pathology useful for diagnosis, reference, and education. The authors are reliable authorities on the topic.
Features: The book discusses the inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic processes of bones and soft tissues. A chapter is dedicated to the temporomandibular joint. The material is organized by system and explanations of anatomy, pathophysiology, and common pathological entities are provided. Multiple high quality images are included to compare gross pathology and MRI pathology with anatomical drawings. This feature is particularly helpful in distinguishing between the variations in labral tears, pathologies of the rotator cuff, etc. Tables outlining grades of tears and lesions make memorizing or referencing easy. The chapter dedicated to post-therapy findings correlates gross pathology with MRI findings. A more in-depth discussion of pediatric and oncological diseases and common anatomical variants would make the book complete.
Assessment: As a thorough introduction to musculoskeletal imaging, this book does well in outlining the most common pathological entities as well as in explaining the background anatomy and pathophysiology. For interested residents, it is less voluminous than other books on the subject, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, 3rd edition, Stoller (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2006), or Musculoskeletal MRI, 2nd edition, Helms et al.(Elsevier, 2009). Readers will come away with an adequate knowledge base to accurately diagnose and grade common musculoskeletal pathologies with this book.
