Description: This is the second edition of a compact pocket reference for students and trainees. The book is unique because the pages fit within a small 6-hole ring binder that serves as the binding. This allows the user to remove pages for ready pocket reference, inserting them into another small ring binder, or to add pages of notes using a standard paper format. The first edition was published in 2011 and many changes in the field of surgery amply justify this new edition.
Purpose: The author states that the purpose is "to provide students with a critical summary of broad anatomic, physiologic, and pathologic principles that form the framework for surgical decision-making" with a goal to facilitate understanding rather than rote memorization. The book thus differs significantly from many books that simply list "pearls" to be memorized and regurgitated upon command; it joins the ranks of textbooks. The book amply meets the objectives.
Audience: The audience is students and trainees in general surgery and the disciplines that flow from it (plastic surgery, pediatric surgery, and so on) that require an initial grounding in general surgery. It also will be useful to surgeons preparing for board exams. The author and contributors are all highly respected surgical educators and authorities in their fields of endeavor.
Features: The 30 chapters, augmented by six appendixes, cover the gamut of topics encountered and needed by a student of surgery. The book follows a conventional order of chapters, with perioperative and critical care topics at the beginning, followed by a series of chapters on organs (e.g. pancreas) and areas (e.g. vascular) that the student must attain familiarity with. The concluding chapters cover simulation and several required curricula. The appendixes give essential information (ACLS, ATLS, ICU drugs, etc). The book has been carefully edited throughout and the chapters are consistent in level of coverage and format. Scattered line drawings enhance key points, but this is not a lavishly illustrated book.
Assessment: This is a high quality pocket textbook. The ring-binder format encourages personalization and ease of use. The emphasis on basic principles is refreshing and stands in stark contrast to the usual "pearl books" that dominate this segment of the marketplace.
