About the Author

Dr. Vail has published over 120 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts and 50 book chapters in the field of veterinary and comparative oncology. David is co-editor of the textbook Small Animal Clinical Oncology, past North American Journal Editor for Veterinary and Comparative Oncology, President of the Canine Comparative Oncology and Genomics Consortium (CCOGC) and a founding member of the Comparative Oncology Trials Consortium (COTC). He is the past Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Boards for both the Morris Animal Foundation and the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Foundation. He has been honored as the recipient of both the Mark L. Morris Sr. Distinguished Research Award and the Pfizer Award for Veterinary Research Excellence.

This textbook of veterinary cancer medicine is a clinically oriented resource. The first 14 chapters are general overviews of selected topics; the remaining chapters deal with specific tumor types. The prior edition was published in 1989 with the title Clinical Veterinary Oncology. The objectives are to provide a textbook that corrects what they describe as historically...strong opinions based on weak data. In the second edition, the objectives are expanded to be ...a state of the art book with an emphasis on biologic behavior and treatment of cancer in small animals. These objectives are worthy, and this edition represents a much-needed resource for veterinarians. For the most part, the objectives are met. The emphasis on exclusion of protocols based on weak data, although important, leaves some treatment areas lightly covered. Veterinary students, practitioners, and veterinary oncologists are the intended audience, according to the authors. The book meets the needs of this audience, although oncology specialists may find some of the material superficial. The editors are highly respected in the field of veterinary oncology. The selection of contributing authors adds depth to the material. Illustrations are black-and-white photographs and line drawings, which are appropriate in amount and quality. The references included are excellent and current. The authors have done a fine job with regard to references. The table of contents and index are well organized and adequate. The book is larger than the previous edition, and the cover design is improved. This second edition represents a substantial improvement and a much-needed reference resource. The bookis well written and exceptionally well referenced. The initial chapters are insightful, well-written overviews of principles of cancer biology, diagnosis, and therapy. The disease-specific chapters present the most current reviews of treatment protocols available. This book is a worthwhile addition to any practicing veterinarian's library.

It is easy to find what you are looking for, be it some background science and explanation regarding cancer therapies, or information on a more specific tumour type. The book begins with a discussion of the basic science and principles of oncology, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This is explained nicely but simply, and is well illustrated throughout...In summary, this book covers the main tumours in good depth; it is a useful reference for the basic principles of veterinary oncology and is certainly recommended for the practice bookshelf.
