Overview

Various historians have recorded Pope Urban II's passionate speech at the Council of Clermont in 1095. The speech called for aid for Eastern Christians and the liberation of Jerusalem from the Turks or Muslim rule and protecting fellow Christians in the East, emphasizing the special sanctity of Jerusalem and the need to fight just wars. He promised forgiveness of sins and eternal rewards for those who participated in this holy war. The pope also denounced the Turks, mentioned the aid requests from the East, alluded to the ease of defeating the enemy, and promised God's leadership.
