When Hunter Kittrell and his beautiful friend Miki arrive in Beaufort, NC, for their summer stay, they decide to liven up the small town by pulling a harmless prank. That prank, however, quickly finds them deeply entangled in a blood bath face-off with a knife-wielding serial killer.

As the usually peaceful town is plunged into chaos, Hunter and Miki find themselves drawn more deeply into the investigation, and it turns out their connection to the murders might not be as tenuous as it seemed at first. As the investigation continues, burning questions bubble: Why is Hunter being framed for at least one of the murders? And why does his missing father's name keep popping up all over town?

Everything crashes to a startling conclusion on Hunter's 21st birthday, when Hunter is forced to face the truths he's been running from his whole life.

About the Author

Sheri grew up in Mt. Airy, NC, and still lives thereabouts with her husband and a pup named Cercie. Together, they've made a living running a couple of small business, and made a life doing the things they enjoy-traveling, hiking, camping, kayaking. Sheri loves music and yoga, inventing gourmet meals from random ingredients, laughing with friends, and most especially spending time with her daughter. A graduate of High Point University, she has burned more pages than most people will ever write, and is currently scribbling a third novel, which may or may not survive the flames. Her first novel is titled A Higher Voice.

Reviewed by Michelle Randall for Readers' Favorite Hunter spends every summer with Granny Jen in Beaufort. This year he has brought Mikki with him, thinking it might be a good thing for them. This summer, a murderer has decided to visit Beaufort and frame Hunter for at least one of the killings. A Deeper Cut mixes drug dealers and sweet, southern charm into a realistic tale of a summer on the shoreline. Hunter is tasked with figuring out who he really is, and whether to continue to let his father's disappearance and failures define him or not. Sheri Wren Haymore writes a wonderful mystery thriller. You want to know who did it, but at the same time the author keeps the beauty and charm of life in a small southern town. A Deeper Cut follows Hunter, and more than just the cuts of the killer are needing to be healed this summer. Hunter has always felt that everyone, except maybe Granny Jen expected him to fail and turn out like his father. This summer he will have to face his father, and the demons he carries and figure out who he really is. Sheri Wren Haymore mixes this soul-searching with the mystery of who is offing drug dealers and sets it all in a sweet, charming southern town. You will feel for Hunter, want to hold the boy, and help him through his struggles. At the same time, you will enjoy the intrigue of discovering who the real killer is and just why the killer might have it in for the Kittrell family.

Reviewed by Mamta Madhavan for Readers' Favorite A Deeper Cut by Sheri Wren Haymore is an intriguing story. Hunter Kittrell and Miki try to make their presence felt in the small town of Beaufort by playing a harmless prank. The harmless prank costs them dearly as they find themselves trapped in the vicious tangle of a serial killer. They find that the otherwise peaceful town being thrown into chaos and confusion. Simultaneously, Hunter finds himself being framed in one of the murders. He also finds it weird that his father's name keeps cropping up many times in that small town. In the meantime, Miki is taken care of by Granny Jen. Things take a turn when Hunter is forced to face the truths that he has been avoiding all his life. The story is gripping with its twists and turns. Readers will not want to put the book down until they finish reading. The enigma surrounding the main characters, Hunter and Miki, give the story an aura of intrigue and suspense that makes the reader eager to know more about the outcome. Apart from the well crafted characters, the language is elegant and the wonderful imagery in the narration adds to the visual aspect of the theme. The characters and the theme have been developed well by the author to make it more powerful. Though the story has a few twists and turns, the author has skilfully woven the sub-plots into the main plot. The author has managed to keep up the pace and suspense of the story to the very end.

Reviewed by Lorena Sanqui for Readers' Favorite Who would have thought that a string of murders would occur in the small, peaceful town of Beaufort. It was supposed to be a summer of fun and games until a man who calls himself “The Cat” appointed himself executioner and began killing drug dealers. Hunter and Miki’s happy and carefree vacation just took a turn for the worse when one of the murders happened closer to them than they thought. Hunter is a suspect for the murder and even if he’s not guilty, a drug agent is hell bent on sending him to jail for whatever charges he can throw at him. Hunter might be in trouble, but so is Miki when she gets tangled up with one of the bad guys in A Deeper Cut by Sheri Wren Haymore.  Sheri Wren Haymore is an amazing suspense writer, seeing as the killer was the most obvious one yet I still didn't get it. I believe the plot of A Deeper Cut was carefully and deliberately planned and organized so that there were clues from the beginning and a reader might still miss it. I love how the story all came together, how the villains are connected with the main characters, and how the mystery was 18 years in the making. Another thing I liked about this was it definitely kept me guessing, but that everything was answered in the end. The climax and conclusion were amazing, I loved how it all panned out. Overall, it is a murder mystery that will thrill readers.

Reviewed by Kathryn Bennett for Readers' Favorite A Deeper Cut by Sheri Wren Haymore introduces us to Hunter and Miki as they arrive in Beaufort, NC to stay for the summer. Like some people tend to do, they want to liven up the town and decide to play a prank. The problem is what they thought was a harmless prank turns into a blood bath that sets them in the path of a serial killer. Beaufort goes from a place of peace to one of chaos and blood. Things get worse, Hunter is being framed, and he will have to face problems from his past that he has been trying to ignore his entire life. It has been a while since I read a mystery with so many levels to it and I really enjoyed this one. As I delved back into the genre of mystery, this book ticked all of my boxes, one right after the other. You have a complex set of characters that draw you in and the picture of their lives gets painted for you in a way that, to me, felt like peeling back an onion and that is the sign of a fantastic book for me. Hunter was my favorite character. I just felt connected with him and the issues he has dealt with. While my father was not a criminal, I did feel like I lost connection from him at a young age, so on that level I just felt some sort of kinship with Hunter. I really feel that the characters come of age while dealing with the chaos that ensues in Sheri Wren Haymore’s book. It is well written and one I would recommend to friends.

Reviewed by Kayti Nika Raet for Readers' Favorite When Hunter Kittrell and his on-again-off-again girlfriend Miki arrive at the small beach town of Beaufort, North Carolina, little do they know that they've just become the targets of a serial killer. As 'The Cat' leaves a bloody swathe of destruction across the small southern town, A Deeper Cut also weaves a tale of growth and forgiveness as Hunter struggles to become the man he was meant to be and not the prickly mask he hides behind after the disappearance of his father. A well written, almost lyrical novel, A Deeper Cut by Sheri Wren Haymore is a mix of murder mystery, Christian fiction, and coming of age tale. A Deeper Cut was an enjoyable read and though I was trying to figure out who the serial killer was before the end of the book, this wasn't like your typical serial killer novel. The blood and gore are relatively mild and the whole mystery takes more of a backseat to Hunter's growth and change from a reckless, angry young man to a more mature and forgiving adult. The town of Beaufort, based on the real town of Beaufort, North Carolina, is almost like another character. Vibrant, alive, and full of Southern flair, Beaufort really shapes the story and makes the rampages of the serial killer on that small town all the more ghastly. A Deeper Cut was an enjoyable read that anyone of any background could enjoy. I must mention that the cover by Ted Ruybal was really simple yet evocative.
