He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and is a former president of the Brazos County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.

Shane is a former United States Marine, serving on active duty from 1977 to 1980. He later joined the Army National Guard to help finance his law school education. Outside the courtroom, Shane is an avid comic book collector and a talented amateur photographer.

He is married to Jean Ricciardello Phelps, a CPA, attorney, and professor at Texas A&M University. Their daughter, Mary Claire Phelps, is nearing graduation from Gonzaga University with a degree in English Literature and is considering following in her father's footsteps to attend law school.
