A Gentleman's Surrender by Mariel Grey

Call her a romantic—or a fool, Lady Monique Cathdon is determined to marry for love. After watching her parents tolerate an arranged betrothal, life seems too short to be wasted on keeping up appearances.

After all, what’s the point of having a heart if one refuses to follow it?

With a smile the devil himself might be proud of, James Stanton is not what her mother would call “a matrimonial prospect”. Still, there’s something about the young man that sends Lady Monique’s heart thumping around her chest, and silences her voice of reason.

Unfortunately for Lady Monique, the stakes are high, and young ladies of the Ton make for very poor gamblers. Especially when James Stanton is on the hunt for revenge, and won’t let an innocent woman—or his own passionate desires–get in the way of righting past wrongs.

About the Author

From the moment she could put pen to paper, Mariel Grey knew she wanted to be a writer. Like all good adventures however, it didn’t happen overnight; it was after several decades of working in litigation that the desire to create dramatic worlds and characters became too great to ignore. Her first foray into historical romance, Surrender of Trust, explored the grime and glamour of regency horse racing, following the determined but impoverished Lucy Goodwin and upright Lord Chalifour. Her second novel, A Gentleman’s Surrender, released January 2016, introduced the innocent Lady Monique and tortured Mr. Stanton, both struggling to find love in a world filled with deceit. Though entirely at home in the ballrooms and street alleys of London past, Mariel Grey is currently working on a contemporary story set in Florida, a landscape dear to the author’s heart. When she isn’t conjuring words on her computer screen, Grey can be found on the water fishing, snorkeling, and enjoying the incredible natural beauty of her home. Mariel has a wonderful husband (the hero of her own romantic story) as well as a mischievous cat (who seems happy to play the role of villain). In addition to being a dutiful wife and animal wrangler, Mariel is a member of the American Romance Writers Association, and the Ancient City Romance Authors chapter. Reviewed by Christian Sia for Readers' Favorite A Gentleman's Surrender is a great book in The Surrender Series by Mariel Grey, a gripping historical romance with a cast of compelling characters. Meet Lady Monique Cathdon, a woman who is determined to break with the tradition of arranged marriages and go after her heart. She wants to marry someone she really loves. James Stanton doesn’t look like one made for marriage, a handsome man who is out for revenge and who won’t want to make the wrong woman suffer as he embarks on a journey to right the wrongs of the past. When Monique meets James, she feels irresistibly drawn to him, throwing caution to the winds, but is James ready to change his philosophy and follow a path he never envisioned? This is a well-written story with a powerful plot and a strong conflict, and the reader will want to discover how it ends. I enjoyed the drama and the skillful handling of conflict, which develops at different levels — physical, psychological, and cultural. The reader is thrust into an exciting world to explore the inner workings of the hearts of the characters. The writing is excellent and it captures the emotional intensity of the story with brilliance. The unique phraseology, the vivid descriptions, and the masterful dialogues make for a very interesting read. I loved the title of the book and I even loved how the story justifies it. A Gentleman's Surrender has great pacing and the structural curve is brilliantly calculated, leaving readers no room for boredom with the characters. Mariel Grey will grab your attention and sustain it until the last page of this gripping novel.

Reviewed by Arya Fomonyuy for Readers' Favorite A Gentleman's Surrender by Mariel Grey is a historical romance and a delightful entry in The Surrender Series, a well-crafted novel that certainly makes the author one of the finest practitioners in the genre. Lady Monique Cathdon wants to break with tradition. She is tired of watching people waste their lives in arranged marriages. So she has made up her mind on falling in love and marrying the man who sets her heart on fire. So, when James Stanton, one not really made for marriage, comes along, Lady Monique can’t resist him. But the young man’s heart is set on revenge and nothing else, and he is keen on ensuring that there are no collateral casualties. Can Monique Cathdon get him to abandon his resolved course and settle for her? One of the first things that caught my attention in this historical narrative is the author’s sense of economy when it comes to words and the intelligent art of precision, which can be very difficult to achieve when it comes to exploring the hearts of characters. Lady Monique is a complex character, highly critical and intuitive, but it is interesting to see how she yields to the reasons of the heart, surrendering to her passions. The author offers the internal struggle of this character in a style that is masterly and that will captivate readers. A Gentleman's Surrender is deftly plotted and intelligently written. The pacing measures with the pulse of the reader. Mariel Grey’s characters, although plucked from another era, are real, believable, and utterly compelling. From the great setting to the exquisite writing, this is a story that will thrill fans of historical romance.

Like Lucy Goodwin, Lady Monique Cathdon is a bit of a rebel. In a time period of when marriages were typically designed more as business arrangements, she wants to only marry for true love. She has a whimsical sense about her that gives her an aura of innocence. Enter James Stanton. If ever a person could be her opposite, Stanton would be it. He challenges every belief about true love, marriage, etc. that Lady Monique Cathdon has designed in her dreams. Her rebellion is shown when she falls for a man who is without a title and in her prestige, it's almost forbidden. Will true love win and will Lady Monique Cathdon find a husband whom she can honestly love? I received this book through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

Gentlemen's Surrender by Mariel Grey is another great story in the Surrender Series. Like book 1, Surrender of Trust, this can be read as a standalone book. I read it in one sitting so it would be perfect to take to the beach, on a plane, etc. We were introduced to Lady Monique in the first book but we didn't get a lot of her story. Just enough to know we loved her. In Gentlemen's Surrender we learn a lot of new and surprising facts about Lady Monique! She is hesitant to become a wife without finding real love and once her families secrets are discovered, she is left confused and heartbroken. This is a story of someone really following their heart in their decisions. James Stanton comes to town to seek revenge but we immediately see that he isn't your typical villain. I love how he is written. He has a side to him that want to seek revenge for a wrong done to his family but we also see that he has good side to him. He is a villain with a heart! Once again, I love the chemistry between the characters and the fact that there is no overt sexual content or foul language. The story is well written and the love and intimate emotions are conveyed well without smut. That's the kind of romance novel I enjoy. The point gets across perfectly! I do feel like both stories could have had a tiny bit more "action" between the good and bad guys but overall it was a wonderful read that kept my attention. I received a complimentary copy for review purposes. All opinions are my own. If you're looking for a quick to read romance novel, Gentleman's Surrender is a great choice! The sins of the parents can cause havoc on their offspring--especially when the entire tale is not told. James Stanton was in such a predicament. His Mom, on her deathbed made him swear to take revenge on the woman she swore had ruined her life. But the more James grew to knew Monique and the rest of her family-the more he began to question himself, and what he was going to do to this family. Then he totally fell in love with Monique-and she with him. When all the truths are finally revealed-(and they will shock you)-will the young lovers finally get married and live happily ever after--or will the truths pull them apart? I loved both the books in this series--if you love historical romance set in England in this time period (which I definitely do) then I highly recommend that you read both books. Each can be read as a stand alone--but the delightful characters are present in both.

What a wonderful addition to the series! Lady Monique is trying to find a husband before she becomes a spinster, but she wants to find love, like her best friend Lucy did. James Stanton intrigues her and makes her feel in a way that she never has. However, James has intrigue of his own... he's determined to destroy Lady Monique's family in every way possible. But will his feelings for her get in the way of his plan? This is such a neat story. It's a fun historical romance set right on the heels of Surrender of Trust, but it definitely can be read alone. I promise you'll want to read them both though! I received this book through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

Surrender Series: A Gentleman’s Surrender Written By: Mariel Grey I typically don’t read historic novels, however, this series caught my attention. This series by Mariel Grey is set in the Georgian era, a time of horse drawn carts, men and women in society and where manners and being proper was expected. In Volume II, Lady Monique and Stanton find their way to each other. Monique is society. She knows the ins and outs of it. She knows she is to choose a husband before she becomes a spinster, however, she hasn’t quite found the one that meets all her needs. She wants someone who doesn’t just think of her as a wife. She wants someone who understands her, who challenges her, who makes her excited to be around him. But the time is almost here where she will be out of options. And, without her wedding a man with a title and plenty of money, her family will be ruined because her brother was bad with the family finances. Stanton returns to England after many years in the United States. His main focus is causing shame to the woman who destroyed his family. His father was in love with Lady Monique’s mother but she refused to marry him because he didn’t have a title. So, he married his second choice (Stanton’s mother) and proceeded to make all their lives miserable. Stanton adored his mother and after her death, he went to England to seek revenge. What Stanton didn’t plan on was falling for the beautiful, intriguing, Lady Monique. Can Stanton put aside his hatred of her mother and let him love Monique? Can Monique put aside her need for a husband with a title and love Stanton? Against all odds, will their relationship falter or stand the test of time? If you like a great love story, try out A Gentleman’s Surrender by Mariel Grey. It will give you hope for a lifetime love, regardless of the obstacles involved.

It seems Lady Monique Cathdon has waited too long to seriously snag a suitable match for a husband. Everyone she had previously enjoyed flirting with had now been spoken for, leaving her with a pool of undesirables. Then, the handsome and alluring James Stanton appears and starts earnestly wooing her. But since he has no title, there’s no way Monique’s mother will allow her to consider him marriage material. With her options quickly diminishing, will Monique follow her mother’s wishes and marry for title, or will she opt for the love she has been seeking all along? This was a very entertaining read. It had comical aspects that had me laughing out loud. The surprise elements threw me for a loop though. I really enjoy reading stories of this time period, and how prim and proper people were. There were several times though, where the repetition of information was distracting and unneeded, but the plot and characters were interesting enough to overlook that aspect of the book.

Uberreader's review of A Gentleman's Surrender by Mariel Grey First and foremost this is a book about how people's secrets and lies not only affect their lives, but the lives of others. James Stanton believes he is avenging the insults done to his mother by her husband and another woman, but before he can complete his plans both his conscience and love find him. He falls in love with one of the innocents that will be injured by his mother's death bed request. This book was an interesting read that will keep you captivated wanting to know if he will continue or if he will realize he is about to ruin not just his victims lives but his own. I am assured that most romance fans will enjoy this book if for no other reason than love prevails, but there is so much more to this book. It has a moral lesson in there that is never going to be out of date. Thank you Ms. Grey good moral lessons that are still engaging are in short supply lately. I also want to thank Ms. Grey and NetGalley for giving me a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

I haven't read a historical romance in a while and it felt like a breather from all the fantasy and contemporary romances I've been reading as of late. Story wise, I can't say it's any different from some of the books I've read before both historical and contemporary. But being a historical romance that this is, the author definitely succeeded in making it sound and appear like the 1800. I felt like I was transported back in time as I read along. From the dialogue, the setting, the theme, the author did a magnificent job. There's also consistency with the characters. I was waiting for a slip when the characters went through several phase of emotions but that didn't happen. Every one spoke and acted like 1800s people. Of course it wasn't my generation and probably not even yours too, so it was more like the feeling when you get to watch 1800s films. The only difference was that I saw this story in vivid colors instead of black and white. In that aspect, the cover helped a lot in conjuring up the proper image for me. Aside from the romance, it's also a story of family and friendships. And I always loved it when those two are included in a good story. That said, my favorite characters were the brother and the best friend. I loved the brother's character because I didn't expect him to turn out to be the way he did. And the best friend because she proved her worth as a friend. It's my first time to read Mariel Grey and I enjoyed not just the story but also the smooth flow of her writing. If you love historical romances, I recommend this book for you.

Reviewed by Kerliza Foon for Readers' Favorite If you're looking for another historical romance novel, then I suggest Mariel Grey's A Gentleman's Surrender. Monique Cathdon, sister to the current Duke of Glenhurst, is looking for a suitor before the Season is over. All seems lost until she meets Sir James Staton. Everything seems to be going well until she discovers he has no title. Is it all over for Monique? James Staton has returned to England from the United States, seemingly wanting to find an English bride and restore the family home to its former glory. At least that's what he wants everyone to think. In reality, James is set on exacting revenge on the people who tore his family apart. Will he succeed or will love derail his plans and lead to happily ever after? Mariel Grey has written a well researched novel in the Regency era. Her characters James and Monique are products of their time and environment as Monique struggles for the ton's approval and James does not really care but still follows polite society's conventions. The overall plot of this story is a classic theme and is well written. The desire to risk everything for a chance at love can be daunting and Mariel Grey has written this novel depicting that struggle clearly. The characters' thoughts and moods are well represented and their development over the span of the book can be seen. The love between James and Monique is based more on their understanding of each other than on their desire for each other. A refreshing change.

A Gentleman’s Surrender is a wonderful novel! It’s a sad but romantic story of honor and revenge. I fell in love with Monique, she’s a great character and her friendship with Lucy is refreshing. Even though I tried not to like Stanton I couldn’t help myself. He’s a lot of fun when he’s not plotting revenge. Don’t miss A Gentleman’s Surrender but remember it’s a heart wrencher!
