A River of Silence by Susan Clayton Goldner-January 24. Detective Radhauser has been through enough tragedy personally and professionally to last a lifetime. He’s lost his wife and son in a car accident and has struggled with cases that he has taken to heart. He’s now married to Grace and they’re making a family of their own with love and happiness but he still deeply feels the loss of his first wife and their son. He’s called out around midnight to investigate a 911 call, where he helps a hearing impaired man administer CPR on a toddler, while waiting for the ambulance. The child ends up dying and Caleb Bryce, the man giving CPR, is arrested. The community seems to immediately believe that Bryce is guilty and he only has a few people who believe he’s innocent, the detective, his appointed lawyer and his elderly neighbor. This well-rounded mystery opened my eyes and heart and reminded me of how precious and fragile life is. The highly developed characters and their interwoven actions and personalities made this mystery an absolute want-to-read-through-in-one-sitting book, 5 stars! *I received a complimentary copy of this book for voluntary review consideration.

In "A River of Silence," the third Detective Radhouser book, Radhouser is called upon to investigate his least favorite kind of crime: one involving the death of a child. On the other side of the story, Caleb Bryce is racked with guilt over failing to prevent the death of his girlfriend's toddler son. But who is really behind it? "A River of Silence" is a murder mystery, but it's also the story of two families, Bryce's and Radhouser's. Bryce is desperate to build a family after being abandoned as a child and losing his own daughter as an infant; Radhouser's attempts to create a second family after his first was destroyed in a car accident are jeopardized when his wife becomes ill. Both men struggle to find acceptance and forgiveness for the people who caused them so much pain. The murder mystery is deftly handled and ends with shocking twist, but just as compelling for the reader is how the family dramas will be resolved and whether Radhouser and Bryce will be able to put the past behind them and move on. The silence referred to in the title could be taken as referring to many things. Most obviously, Bryce is hearing impaired and lives in a kind of semi-silence. All the characters struggle with loss and the silence of those who have been taken from them. And perhaps silence also suggests the peace that can be found in acceptance and forgiveness. This is a murder mystery that will tug at the heartstrings, but also gives hope that it is possible to come back from suffering and loss and find peace with one's life. My thanks to the author for providing a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

A River of Silence by Susan Clayton-Goldner A Winston Radhauser Mystery #3 Excellent in all ways! Imagine being imprisoned for something you did not do. Imagine being hearing impaired in prison. Imagine being beaten physically and mentally for the crime they say you committed. Imagine being the detective who believes the criminal innocent. Imagine being the public defender preparing to defend and innocent man. And…imagine reading a book that brought life to every nuance of the characters and supporting characters as they fought for justice throughout the book. Sensational story that appealed to all of my senses and to my heart – I felt for Caleb Bryce as his story unfolded and understood Kendra as she fought for his life. I believed in Detective Radhauser and felt his pain as he dealt with issues in his life that were on the sidelines but oh so very present as he worked to ensure the truth would be revealed about the death of an innocent toddler. Every emotion, feeling and scene resonated within me as I read into the wee hours of the morning to find out how this mystery would be resolved…and have to say this book will stay with me for some time because it was oh so very good in all ways. Thank you to the author for the ARC – this is my honest review. 5 Stars
