About the Author

John R. Green (1837-1883) was an English clergyman turned historian.  He is best remembered today for his four volume Short History of the English People (1874).  The J. R. Green society, a historical society at Jesus College, Oxford, founded by Green's students, continues to thrive more than a century after his death.
