Overview

Radford, Va., is identical to many other small cities in the South, but if you're easily terrified, you might want to think twice about staying there. Rumors of ghosts are so regular in Radford many locals don't even lose sleep about it anymore. Folks who have never spent the night will tell you it's nothing but a pack of lies, however, seeing is believing. And if you plan on an overnight stay there's a chance that you might see a ghost.
To be on the safe side, you may want to consider doing what most residents do, keep your windows and doors locked especially after sundown. It would take too much time to explain how and when these ghost stories began. So let's just start with this one.

About the Author

Stow native Rich Manley came to Daniel Hood, a long time friend and martial arts partner, with a 300 page screenplay he had been working on for two years while attending Radford University in Radford, Va. Rich wanted to create a dramatic action piece that incorporated elements of suspense, mystery, romance, and horror. The story was solid; the characters very engaging. However, the writing was meant for film and written in a screenplay format.
Both writers knew that the amount of information and the depth of the world that Rich created were too vast to encompass a typical film. Therefore, he decided to revamp his approach and work closely with Dan to develop a novel based on the original ideas that Rich had been working on. In his version, as Dan so blatantly put it, "It was a tragic love story with lots of action and intrigue." He wanted to change the dynamic and put his years of journalism expertise to use. He switched the plot flow and focused more on the mystery, suspense element rather than Rich's tragic romantic tale that followed a much darker side.
Dan, who lives in Wayland, Mass., infused the story with more life and substance, enriching it with a deeper less complicated story line. In a nutshell, Rich's version was more focused on the unsettling emotional state of the main characters in conjunction with a sinister and monumental conspiracy within Radford, Va. In fact, to increase this sense of hopelessness, Rich also warped the actual real life Radford into a much smaller and darker town than what it actually is, keeping everything, including relationships, very tight. Dan took the elements of Rich's writings and brought them closer to reality, adding his own imaginative literary flare for suspense and drama.
Acre Beyond the Rye has been a tiresome collaboration of two good friends who hope to share this spellbinding story with everyone who has an appetite for the unexpected.
