Alaska Range
Alaska Range is a collection of four tales of flying and mountaineering in the mountains of Alaska in the days before GPS, cell-phones, and MP3's. Each is related by a different character, faced with difficult decisions and deadly challenges, with the common thread their reliance on a mysterious veteran glacier pilot who seems to possess more than the normal five senses.

Denali Pass has a young mountain guide pressing the pilot for some chance to rescue a team of young climbers caught in a raging storm high on Mt. McKinley. How much will he risk to save the young woman he loves? Beyond that, what will he sacrifice to help a climber he despises?

St. Elias Range lands two young climbers and their pilot in a deadly trap. After one is injured, the climbing adventure immediately changes into a struggle to escape with their lives.

Labyrinth brings the pilot on board as a fellow passenger with a young Alaskan and his wheel-chair-bound sister. An accident forces them onto a crevasse-riddled glacier, dependant on the pilot's sixth sense to lead them through the maze. But the first necessity for survival is sometimes the most challenging - a desire to live.

Flight of the Raven, previously published in the anthology Triskaideka, forces a young woman back-country doctor to enlist the pilot for a hazardous mercy flight to save a comatose patient. Which is more frightening, the surrounding peaks, invisible in the storm-clouds, or the ice visible on the wings?

Who is the real hero? A man whose unnatural skills allow him to peform impossible rescues, but with little evident regard for the risk to his own life? Or the frightened people who risk their lives with him, out of duty, or conscience, or love?

More than simple adventure tales, Alaska Range delves into our fears and motivations, and the real meaning of courage and honour.

About the Author

The author fuels his love of the mountains with occasional adventures of his own, supplemented with a collection of mountaineering books which would be the envy of most libraries. And yes, he has flown a light aircraft.
While many mountaineering expedition books are more exciting than the most imaginative fiction, the number of actual works of fiction in this genre is small. The author's modest contribution to the field allows us to explore our concepts of "honour and glory."
