About the Author

Glen Moller is currently stabling on Long Island, New York with one wife, two sons, one daughter, two dogs, one cat, and too much action. He doesn't especially love carrots nor does he own a horse, but he does identify deeply with horses (or anyone else) who are taunted by carrots (or anything else). This is his first picture book, though not his first lesson on multi-party economic negotiations.

CHAPTER 1

A boy and his horse were riding along. The boy was cheerful and singing a song. The boy had a stick with a carrot that hung just a step and a half from the horse's tongue. The horse dragged his feet and slowed down the pace till the boy cried, "Hey, Horsie! Why the long face?"

"My boy," said the horse, "I'm a steed of good merit. But I'm hungry, you see, and I want that carrot! No matter how far I gallop and walk, it's just out of reach. It's time that we talk! Will you pretty please give me a nibble, just one? I'll speed us on home—I promise I'll run!" But the boy said, "I'm kind of uncertain, my friend. For how do I know that you'll go till the end? But I'll make you an offer—a deal, my good horse: If you figure out how to get it, it's yours!"

And so the horse tried all the tricks that he knew. He cantered, he pranced, and skyward he flew. But never a nibble and never a taste did he manage to score—it was all a big waste.

Now all the while, a crowd was forming—of curious creatures who noticed his storming. They gathered around, took seat on the ground, and called to their friends, "Watch this horse jump around!"

Well, before too long, a robin flew by and caused him to think of a plan he could try. "Good robin," he called in his most polite way, "I'm asking your helpfullest help here today. "I know how to do this. I've figured it out! Just perch on the carrot and fly toward my mouth!"

The animals cheered. They stomped and they shouted. This plan would work! Nobody doubted. The robin was beaming and loved the attention, but she soon became thoughtful and changed her intention.

"I'd love to help you," chirped Robin, "you see, there's just one question, what's in it for me? Sure, you need help with your problem today, but what's it to me? Why not just fly away?"

"OK, little robin," offered the horse. "If it's carrots you like, I'll share mine, of course!" "It's not carrots I want," said the robin with laughter. The horse gritted his teeth and asked, "What are you after?"
