Alligators Overhead
Twelve-year-old Pete Riley always stirs up trouble in the backwater town of Hadleyville. His latest school prank is sure to land him in a military academy, something his guardian, Aunt Lizzie, has threatened if he gets into one more mess.
Unfortunately, one more mess has happened. When the school principal calls Aunt Lizzie, Pete's life will be ruined. His first day of spring break he stations himself at the phone, but when a call comes it's not from the principal. Instead, a mysterious woman says, "Today is the day, Peter Riley," and hangs up.
"The day for what?" he wonders. He soon finds out when a legendary hundred-year-old mansion, materializes at the edge of the Ornorfree Swamp. Did he imagine the house into existence? He's not sure. Secretly, he's worried because lately when he wishes something would happen it sometimes does.
After the mysterious mansion arrives, Hadleyville is transformed from boring to bizarre. Pete discovers he's living among a sadly out of practice coven of witches. His Aunt Lizzie is the leader, and the Ornorfree Swamp alligators are the witches' familiars. These alligators are in danger if Aunt Lizzie's Save the Ornorfree Committee can't find legal ways to stop developers from destroying another chunk of the swamp.
Pete and his bookish friend,Weasel, join forces with the witches.Together, they switch tactics from legal action to sabotage and protest. But their plans turn into disaster when the sheriff arrests the protesters, and Pete and Weasel narrowly escape his clutches.
Magick is the only way left. The problem is that the witches' spells are a tad shabby and could get them into trouble. Still, without any other options, they try, and . . . vanish.
It's up to Pete to harness what he's come to know are his own strange powers, bring back the Hadleyville witches, and stop the bulldozers. He's scared he'll fail. If he doesn't do this one thing right, the witches (including his aunt) will be lost and so will the swamp.

About the Author

C. Lee McKenzie has a background in Linguistics and Inter-Cultural Communication, but these days her greatest passion is writing for young readers. Some Very Messy Medieval Magick is the third book in the time-travel adventures of Pete and Weasel, with Alligators Overhead and The Great Timelock Disaster being the first two. Sign of the Green Dragon, another book for young readers, jumps into ancient Chinese dragon myths and a quest for treasure.

Her young adult work is represented by Italia Gandolfo. McKenzie has published four young adult novels: Sliding on the Edge, The Princess of Las Pulgas, Double Negative, and Sudden Secrets. When she’s not writing she’s hiking or traveling or practicing yoga or asking a lot questions about things she still doesn’t understand.
