An Earl by Any Other Name by Lauren Smith

An earl in the streets, a rogue in the sheets . . .

Leopold Graham, Lord Hampton, was never a man to let propriety stand in the way of his pursuit of pleasure. Hedonism is his only desire in life---until his father's death saddles him with debts that threaten to bankrupt the entire family. Now the only thing that stands between him and utter ruin is marriage to a proper, and preferably wealthy, young lady.

Ivy Leighton is no sweet English rose. Perhaps it's her gypsy roots, but she would rather make a spectacle of her independent spirit than sit quietly on the sidelines. If that means that the only place she'll ever have in society is firmly on the shelf, then so be it. But when Ivy runs into the handsome, rakish Leo who's looking for a respectable, well-bred wife, she can't stop thinking about the troubles they can get into. Now she just has to convince him that a life with her is really what he needs.

This was a great quick read. Leo was determined to marry a respectable, rich woman after his father left his family in ruins, but his mother has other plans. Ivy has been in love with Leo for years and when his mother invites her to a house party in hopes of matching the two of them, she jumps on board. I loved watching these two together and even though this was a novella, I didn't feel like their story was rushed. Definitely one that I would recommend!

Very cute story set in the early 1900s. Leo, Earl of Hampton, is in financial trouble. He plans to marry a wealthy neighbor to whom he is not attracted to save his estate. Much to his dismay, his mother is involved in the women’s suffrage movement. She is planning a house party and talks him into it by saying she won’t go to the political meeting. One of the guests, Ivy Leighton, spent the first years of her life living at his estate as her mother worked there. Leo was older but played with her and called her Button. When her mother died, the countess found her father and she went to live with him. Her father, a wealthy publisher, is also attending the party. Leo does not recognize Ivy and the servants have been told to pretend they don’t know her. Leo is attracted to Ivy but appalled at her “women should be able to vote” beliefs. He is falling in love with her and eventually figures out who she is. There is a secondary romance going on but I’ll leave you to figure that out. I hope Leo’s friends, Owen and Jack, get their own HEAs. I enjoyed this book very much.

This book....THIS BOOK!!! If you are a fan of Downton Abby, or Titanic, or the early 20th century (pre WW 1), you will love this book. Laure Smith masterfully takes us back to the age where there was still a touch of elegance in society, where a good name could make or break a fortune, and when you still had to choose between marrying for love and for wealth. This book reminded me of the relationship between Lady Sybill and Tom Branson from Downton Abby, but in reverse. In Lauren's book, the hero was from the wealthy family, and the heroine was from a working class family - albeit a very wealthy working class family. Our hero Leo must choose between marrying his childhood sweetheart, or marrying a lady from a rich family who will save his family's estate. And what a choice! Our heroine, Ivy, was everything I wanted her to be! Strong, courageous, witty, and unafraid to stand up for herself and her beliefs - while having a kind and loving heart. Through the twists and turns, the "will they or won't they," and the "will they go with their heads or their hearts," Lauren Smith has woven another story that had me glued to my kindle. I may even like it more than some of her other books....which is VERY difficult to do! Lauren Smith is an insta-buy author for me, and I hope she will be for you too!

5 - "Being respectable... was going to kill him." Stars! Lauren Smith is one of a few authors who I will happily read Historical Romance by, mainly because it’s so well-crafted you just get lost in the story. An Earl by Any Other Name; the first book from her new Sins and Scandals series met all of my expectations and then some. Love was a risk he would not take... I really enjoyed Leo and Ivy’s story, it’s a sort of old and new money collides type of tale, except Leo’s old money has pretty much been used up when the death of his father uncovers just how badly he had been managing the family’s finances in favour of his mistress in town, he knows he needs to step back from his gallivanting roguish ways and marry well in order to save the families estate, and love is definitely not part of the equation… I cannot be that man anymore, the carefree fool who didn’t know his life was on the brink of collapse… Well until his mother starts meddling and literally throws Ivy Leighton in his path. A woman who remembers him as the hero from her childhood, someone she loved in secret, and although Leo feels something is familiar about her, he doesn’t recognize her as the child he used to affectionately call Button. "Why do I have a feeling you are going to be trouble, Miss Leighton..?" "Trouble…" "Oh yes. Just when I have everything planned, you come along and remind me of why I used to be so wicked." This was just another great read, and although novella length, didn’t feel like the story or character depth had been skimped on, once again the author pulled me in, kept me entertained and left me smiling with this book, as well as introducing me to Owen Hadley, the hero of the next book A Gentleman Never Surrenders due for release in September, and I for one cannot wait to read it! "I’m already damned, so what’s one more scandal!"

'An Earl by Any Other Name' by Lauren Smith is the First book in a New Series called 'Sins and Scandals'. This is the story of Leopold Graham, Lord Hampton and Ivy Leighton. Please note also this is a Novella with about 105 pages. Leo was an admitted rake but after the death of his father....who died in the arms of his mistress. Leo has found that besides that his father has left them with a mountain of debt. So he has taken to get them out of debit and to help get their name back. Ivy was once a great friend to Leo when they were younger and would follow Leo around everywhere. But when tragedy struck she was taken away by her father. So in the present day she hasn't seen Leo since they were young. Ivy is not the demure lady and town gossip always seems to be talking about he wouldn't think that she would be what a town wife would be. But it appears his mother thinks differently. So love Ms. Smith books! Another great story! "My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."

"An Earl by Any Other Name" is a short, sweet, and sexy Historical Romance. This is the first book in Lauren Smith's Sins and Scandals series. The Hero's Leo the latest Lord of Hampton who's father ruined the family name. Leo's determined to become so respectable society will forget his family's shame. The fact no one wants to do business with him leaves his family estate financially at risk. His mother's happy to be out of their official mourning period and wants to live a new and scandalous life. Leo's beside himself when his mother informs him she wants to become a Suffragette. He refuses to allow her to attend a local rally but agrees to her request to host a house party. Little does Leo know his mother has the perfect Suffragette lined up to steal his heart. The romance in "An Earl by Any Other Name" is sweet and sexy and the nostalgia is beautiful. The time period is familiar to fans of Downton Abbey. This setting is when many of the aristocrats' country homes and tenant farms were failing. The gentry was scrambling to either invest well or hunt for a wealthy wife. Lauren Smith introduces Owen Hornsby, a friend of Leo's who is experiencing serious financial issues. I'm sure we'll see him in an upcoming installment of the Sins and Scandals series. He's desperately willing to do almost anything to save his estate. Leo and Ivy are charming and intriguing. My only issue is it's at times overly repetitive. Ivy mentally reminds herself that she's sworn to never marry countless times. Leo mentally convinces himself Ivy isn't a suitable match. I mean EXTREMELY repetitive. That's truly the only objection I have to this delightful book. To read the entire review please visit: This novel was provided, voluntarily read, and honestly reviewed.

He's a rogue of the first order. Never met a woman he couldn't tempt or a party he wouldn't enjoy. She's a firecracker. Independent and meant to be the center of attention. Even if that notice, lands her in some sticky situations and having to face down some judgmental people. Ivy and Graham are two halves of a whole, but too bullheaded to admit it. Lauren Smith has never been afraid of explosive tales and carnal delights. An Earl By Any Other Name stays true to that formula but throws in some laughs and romance to even out the passion. The heat is fierce, the humor is smart and the drama's enough to capture the heart.
