Steven Wilson has just competed in his first ever Rolex 4 Star Event. He slowly packs his gear for the trip home as the memories replay fresh in his mind. Steven isn’t in a hurry as he enjoys every last moment of the event, but most of the other competitors have already left for home. His event horse and a mare, that he bought while in Kentucky, are now on the trailer. He finishes loading the rest of his gear into the truck and trailer and heads off to home.
After only a short time on the road, Steven realizes it’s later than he thought, so he decides to find a place off the expressway to get something to eat. As he enters the bar and grill, Steven is quickly greeted by a couple of eventers who had also competed at the Rolex. Both riders had been eliminated but are in good spirits. They are surrounded by a group of spectators who had also been at the event and are now being entertained by the riders’ stories. As Steven takes a seat at the table, the two riders and the spectators shared that they had witnessed all Steven’s joy and happiness as he rode in the victory lap ceremony and reveled in his excitement.
After slowly enjoying his steak and talking with his new friends, Steven ends up leaving later than he had hoped. He checks the horses in the trailer and is back on the highway in minutes after leaving the parking lot. The traffic is light, because of the time, and Steven relaxes a bit assuming the trip home should go easily the rest of the way. After the first few miles he glances in his rearview mirror to see if the other riders might be catching up. He had enjoyed the companionship and the conversation and hopes that they will stay in touch and meet up at future events.
But then it happens. Fate deals him a harsh blow, and it will be a struggle to ever regain all that he has been fortunate enough to experience and enjoy.

About the Author

Steve Farkos

After a tour in the corporate world for several decades and a lifetime of participating in contact sports Steve discovered a special passion that had been inside since his childhood. Horses had become an obsession in his drawings and hopeful experiences as he traveled through his younger years.
It wasn’t until later with a shared love of horses with his young wife that horses became a reality. As they learned more of the aspects of horse care and riding, the family’s horse desires grew. Steve’s observation of his first ever Event hooked him and he went from obsessed to possessed. His first competitive years were infiltrated with mistakes, mishaps and learning experiences. It was a partnership with a gray horse, named Petoskey, which provided him with the experiences that he would cherish forever. During a decade of competitive experiences, Steve placed consistently in the ribbons and was fortunate enough to place four different times in Regional Championships with three of the horses he’d trained. His love of the sport led him to start instructing others so that they could experience the sport he had come to feel so strongly about. Steve and his family bought and developed a farm. They all made it ‘event friendly’ and a good place for training. Today he has an event team that competes throughout the Midwest and his farm holds mini-events for newcomers to test their skills.
To this day Steve believes in the philosophy once stated by Dr. Reimer Klimke (who won six Olympic Gold Medals in Dressage and one as a member of the German Eventing Team), “Eventing is the ultimate equestrian sport for the most complete development of both the horse and rider.” It is on this belief that Steve trains his horses and students.
