Description: This is a welcome update of a 2004 review of anesthetic considerations important in the care of patients with congenital heart disease.
Purpose: The book focuses on the many new and novel developments in the theory and practice of pediatric cardiac anesthesia.
Audience: Although the book is geared for clinical practitioners, many sections aim to supplement practitioners' practical knowledge with information on embryology, outcomes research, and advocacy. The combination of practical and more theoretical content results in a well-rounded update for both novice and experienced practitioners.
Features: The various congenital cardiac lesions are discussed, but the utility of the book is enhanced by its discussion of topics in other areas such as cardiology, embryology, radiology, and the basic sciences. Innovations such as hybrid procedures, extracorporeal assist devices, and the evolution of the subspecialty of pediatric cardiac anesthesia all receive new coverage.
Assessment: Not many books focus on the anesthetic considerations inherent in the care of patients with congenital heart disease. This one does a good job of concisely presenting a well-rounded view of the information essential for effective practice in this challenging patient population. Chapters covering pediatric cardiac anesthesia history, embryology, and new innovations enrich readers' background knowledge. This book will not replace a good surgical or critical care book for information related to specific operations or extensive perioperative considerations, but that is not its intent. The second edition represents a useful update to the first, with vital coverage of new technology and information that impacts practice. This will be useful to novice as well as experienced practitioners.
