EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK
Ann can trace her family's ancestry all the way back to the pilgrims. The ancestors of her mother, Edith, traveled the Atlantic Ocean on the Mayflower and settled at Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620. Over the centuries, Ann's mom's family traveled westward to Wisconsin where her mother was raised, and later to New Jersey. There she met Ann's father, Hank, who was attending Princeton University, and the two liked each other immediately. They married in 1953 and had Ann two years later (Kjelle 2006).
Ann grew up in a creative family. Her father was a cartoonist for The New Yorker and her mother was a preschool teacher. Her parents exposed Ann and her younger sister Jane to a wealth of children's literature. Ann loved fantasy books as child, such as The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland.
After reading Harriet the Spy, Ann and her sister Jane reenacted the story by spying on passengers on a train ride to California and jotting down notes in a secret notebook.
