What People are Saying About This

From the Publisher

"Bruce Metzger is one of the world's great biblical scholars. His books on the text and canon of the New Testament are the most authoritative and influential of modern times. He is also a sensitive interpreter of the early Christian writings, as is now evident in this publication of his lectures on 'Faith, Hope, and Love.' All readers are in his debt for these clear and insightful comments on three of the most important, and relevant, books of the New Testament."
—Bart Ehrman author of The New Testament: A Historical Introduction to the Early Christian Writings

Bruce Metzger is more than a living legend in New Testament scholarship—as though that were not achievement enough in one lifetime. He is and has always been a doctor of the church, an interpreter of scripture 'through faith for faith.' Based on a lifetime of study and patient exegesis, Apostolic Letters of Faith, Hope, and Love penetrates to the core of three New Testament gems: Galatians, 1 Peter, and 1 John. Read, learn, and give thanks.

—C. Clifton Black, Otto A. Piper Professor of Biblical Theology, Princeton Theological Seminary; coauthor of 'Anatomy of the New Testament', Sixth Edition (2006)

"In what may be his last published work, the late Bruce Metzger (1914—2007) summarizes the message of Galatians, 1 Peter, and 1 John for a lay audience under the catchwords "faith, hope, and love," producing a work that is profitable for a scholarly audience . . . .
"What the scholar will also find in this work is a clearly written book with an informal yet elegant style that almost gives the impression that Metzger is sitting in a chair across the room, discussing the works with you. This beautiful writing displays how to communicate scholarly insights (which are indeed scholarly, whether or not one agrees with every position that he takes) without dumbing them down. He demonstrates clarity of explanation, not reduction of content. This is the work of a true master. Surely that is also part of Metzger's legacy to scholarship and something from which any scholar can learn."
