CHAPTER 1
Butterflies in Blue

Practice makes perfect. By the time you have finished the machine appliqué on the last block you will be ready for any fusible appliqué project.

Basic sewing tools and supplies
Cutting
Prepare templates for appliqué shapes using patterns given in the pattern insert.
From black batik:
Cut butterfly bodies as per pattern and instructions.
From medium blue batik 1:
Cut 5 (2" by fabric width) strips.
Subcut into 20 (2" x 2½") B rectangles and 20 (2" x 5½") C rectangles.
From medium blue batik 2:
Cut butterfly upper wings as per pattern and instructions.
From dark blue batik 1:
Cut 8 (2" by fabric width) strips.
Subcut into 20 (2" x 5½") D rectangles and 20 (2" x 8½") E rectangles.
From dark blue batik 2:
Cut butterfly lower wings as per pattern and instructions.
Cut 13 (1½" by fabric width) G strips.
Cut 6 (2½" by fabric width) K/L strips.
Cut 6 (2¼" by fabric width) binding strips.
From light blue batik:
Cut 1 (2½" by fabric width) strip.
Subcut into 10 (2½") A squares.
Cut 3 (8½" by fabric width) strips.
Subcut into 10 (8½") F squares.
Cut 30 (1" by fabric width) H strips.
Subcut 4 strips into 60 (1" x 2½") H2 segments. Set aside remaining 26 strips for H-G-H strip sets.
Cut 11 (2" by fabric width) I/J/M/N strips.
Completing the Courthouse Steps Blocks
1. To complete one Courthouse Steps block, select one A square and two each B, C, D and E rectangles.
2. Sew B to opposite sides of A referring to Figure 1; press seams toward B.
3. Add D to the top and bottom of the A-B unit referring to Figure 2; press seams toward D.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 with C and then E pieces referring to Figure 3 to complete one block; press seams toward C and E pieces.
5. Repeat steps 1–4 to complete a total of 10 Courthouse Steps blocks.
Completing the Butterfly Blocks
1. Trace butterfly shapes onto the paper side of the fusible web leaving at least¼" between shapes referring to patterns for number to cut. Reverse the lower wing pattern as directed, referring to Figure 4.
2. Cut out shapes, leaving a margin around each one.
3. Fuse shapes to the wrong side of fabrics as directed on pieces for color. Cut out shapes on traced lines; remove paper backing.
4. Fold and crease each F square horizontally and vertically to mark the centers.
5. To complete one Butterfly block, center and layer one butterfly motif on a creased F square in numerical order referring to pattern; fuse in place when satisfied with positioning.
6. Using black all-purpose thread and a machine buttonhole or blanket stitch, stitch around each shape.
7. Transfer antennae lines above the butterfly body using the water-erasable marker.
8. Using 2 strands of black embroidery floss and a chain stitch, stitch along the marked lines to complete one Butterfly block.
9. Repeat steps 5–8 to complete a total of 10 Butterfly blocks.
Completing the Quilt
1. To make sashing strips, sew an H strip right sides together to opposite long sides of a G strip to make an H-G-H strip set; press seams toward H strips. Repeat to make a total of 13 strip sets.
2. Subcut the H-G-H strip sets into 49 (2½" x 8½") H-G-H strips and 30 (1½" x 2½") H-G-H units as shown in Figure 5.
3. Sew an H2 segment to opposite sides of each 1½" x 2½" H-G-H unit to make a sashing square as shown in Figure 6. Repeat to make 30 sashing squares.
4. Arrange and join the Courthouse Steps and Butterfly blocks in five rows of four blocks and five H-G-H strips each, referring to the Assembly Diagram. Press seams away from the blocks.
5. Arrange and join four H-G-H strips and five sashing squares to make a sashing row, referring to the Assembly Diagram; press seams away from the sashing squares. Repeat to make a total of six sashing rows.
6. Join the block rows with the sashing rows referring to the Assembly Diagram to complete the quilt center; press seams toward the sashing rows.
7. Join the I/J/M/N strips on the short ends to make a long strip; press. Subcut strip into two each of the following size strips: 2" x 52½" I, 2" x 45½" J, 2" x 59½" M and 2" x 52½" N.
8. Referring to the Assembly Diagram for adding all strips, sew I strips to opposite long sides and J strips to the top and bottom of the quilt center; press seams toward I and J strips.
9. Join the K/L strips on the short ends to make a long strip; press. Subcut strip into two 2 ½" x 55½" K strips and two 2½" x 49 ½" L strips.
10. Sew K strips to opposite long sides and L strips to the top and bottom of the quilt center; press seams toward K and L strips.
11. Sew M strips to opposite long sides and N strips to the top and bottom of the quilt center to complete the quilt top; press seams toward M and N strips.
12. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Finishing Your Quilt on page 48.
13. Quilt as desired.
14. Bind referring to Finishing Your Quilt on page 48 to finish.

Prepare templates for large flower, star flower and small and large leaf shapes using patterns given in the pattern insert. Cut as per instructions.
From cream batik:
Cut 1 (13½" x 17½") A rectangle.
From green/cream plaid batik:
Cut 2 (3½" x 21") strips.
Subcut into 1 each 3½" x 17½" B strip and 3½" x 16½" C strip.
From dark batik:
Cut 2 (2¼" by fabric width) binding strips.
Completing the Background
1. Sew B to the right long edge of A, and then sew C to the bottom edge; press seams toward B and C.
2. Mark curving lines on A using the curved vine stitching pattern given in the pattern insert and referring to Figure 1 for positioning, or draw the lines freehand as desired.
3. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Finishing Your Quilt on page 48.
4. Quilt as desired.
5. Add hanging sleeve, if desired. Note: See Making a Hanging Sleeve sidebar for instructions on page 11.
6. Bind referring to Finishing Your Quilt on page 48 to finish.
Completing the Appliqué
1. Lay 6-strand lengths of green embroidery floss along the marked curved lines and couch-stitch in place using stitches about ¼" apart and matching green thread, referring to Figure 2.
2. Trace flower and leaf templates on the wrong side of two layers of matching fabrics for sets; pin centers and stitch on the traced lines as shown in Figure 3.
3. Cut out stitched shapes 3/16" from stitching lines and cut a slit in the back side referring to Figure 4.
4. Clip curves and corners, again referring to Figure 4; turn right side out through the slits.
5. Insert small batting scraps in the petals of flowers and in leaf shapes to add dimension.
6. Hand-stitch a circle in the center of each star flower and pull thread to gather as shown in Figure 5.
7. Machine-stitch vein lines on leaves using matching thread referring to Figure 6.
8. Stitch lines between petals on the large flowers and pull to gather slightly as shown in Figure 7.
9. Select a star flower and hand-stitch inside one large flower, leaving petals loose as shown in Figure 8. Repeat with two remaining large flowers.
10. Arrange and pin the layered flowers from step 9 in a cluster on the right bottom corner of A referring to the Placement Diagram.
11. Add remaining star flowers and leaves as desired and pin in place.
12. Stitch pieces in place, folding edges to the center to attach, leaving edges free referring to Figure 9.
13. Using 3 strands of yellow embroidery floss, add seven French knots in the each star flower as shown in Figure 10.
14. Repeat step 13 with green floss to add seven French knots to upper edges of couched curved lines referring to the curved vine stitching pattern given to finish.
CHAPTER 3Appliquéd Hex Runner

Prepare a template for the A1/A2 hexagon using pattern given in pattern insert.
From gold tonal:
Cut 27 A1 pieces as per instructions.
From red print:
Cut 40 A2 pieces as per instructions.
From green tonal:
Cut 1 (11" by fabric width) strip.
Subcut into 3 (11") B squares.
Cut 1 (8" by fabric width) strip.
Subcut into 4 (8") C squares.
Cut 4 (2¼" by fabric width) binding strips.
Preparing the Hexagons
1. Trace around the prepared template on the wrong side of the gold tonal (A1) and red print (A2) fabrics, leaving ½" between shapes referring to Figure 1.
2. Cut out fabric shapes leaving a ¼" seam allowance all around referring to Figure 2.
Completing the Hex Flower Blocks
1. Select one A2 and six A1 hexagons.
2. Join two A1 hexagons, starting and ending stitching at the end of the marked seam allowance as shown in Figure 3. Note: You may hand- or machine-stitch the pieces together, whichever is easiest for you.
3. Join remaining A1 hexagons in the same manner to make a hexagon ring referring to Figure 4; press seams to one side.
4. Set the A2 hexagon in the center of the A1 unit to complete one pieced hexagon.
5. Turn under the outer seam allowances on the marked lines all around; hand-baste and press to hold in place.
6. Repeat steps 1–5 to complete four pieced hexagons.
7. Fold and crease one C square to mark the vertical, horizontal and diagonal centers as shown in Figure 5.
8. Center and pin one pieced hexagon unit on the C square using creased lines as guides referring to Figure 6.
9. Hand-stitch around the edge of the pieced unit using thread to match and a slipstitch to complete one Hex Flower block.
10. Repeat steps 7–9 to complete a total of four Hex Flower blocks.
Completing the Hex Frame Blocks
1. Select and join 12 A2 pieces as in steps 2 and 3 of Completing the Hex Flower Blocks and referring to Figure 7 to complete one hexagon ring.
2. Repeat step 1 to complete a total of three hexagon rings.
3. Fold and crease the B squares as in step 7 for Completing the Hex Flower Blocks.
4. Place a hexagon ring on a creased B square referring to Figure 8 for positioning.
5. Hand-stitch the hexagon ring in place as in step 9 for Completing the Hex Flower Blocks.
6. Turn under and press the edges of one A1 hexagon along the marked seam line; baste to hold.
7. Referring to the block drawing, center the basted A1 hexagon in the center of the B square to complete one Hex Frame block.
8. Repeat steps 4–7 to complete a total of three Hex Frame blocks.
Completing the Runner
1. Arrange and join the blocks in diagonal rows referring to the Assembly Diagram; press.
2. Join the rows to complete the runner top; press.
3. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Finishing Your Quilt on page 48.
4. Quilt as desired.
5. Bind referring to Finishing Your Quilt on page 48 to finish.
CHAPTER 4'Round the Block Wool Table Topper

Temporary adhesive spray
Template material
20" square piece newsprint
Tailor's chalk
6 small beads approximately ?" in assorted colors (for doorknobs)
24 seed beads in assorted colors (for flower centers)
Basic sewing tools and supplies
Preparing House Motifs
1. Using the house motif given in the pattern insert and leaving ½" between pieces, trace six each house, roof, chimney and door shapes, and 12 window shapes onto the paper side of the fusible web.
2. Cut out shapes, leaving a margin around each one.
3. From the assorted wool scraps, select pieces for one house motif (one each house, roof, door and chimney, and two windows). Fuse shapes to the chosen fabrics.
4. Cut out on traced lines; remove paper backing and stack these pieces together.
5. Repeat to make six stacks of house pieces.
Completing the Fusible Appliqué
1. Prepare a template for the cone shape using the pattern given in the pattern insert.
2. Fold the newsprint square to mark the horizontal and vertical centers. Trace the template shape onto the paper with the point toward the center as shown in Figure 1. Pick up the template and place it back on the paper matching the template edges to the drawn edge and trace again. Continue tracing six times to make the scallop shape, again referring to Figure 1.
3. Cut out the traced shape with scallop edges. Lay this pattern on top of the light blue wool square and trace around outer edges with tailor's chalk; cut out on traced lines.
4. Fold the scallop background and find the center of each scallop; mark with a pin as shown in Figure 2.
5. Measure and mark 1" in from the marked center of each scallop again referring toFigure 2.
