Ariadne's Thread
Ariadne’s Thread came from the need to tell stories of the amazing women in my family. All of them, born in Russia before the 1917 Revolution, settled in France where they had to adapt to a life radically different from what they had known. When their world collapsed, they could either collapse with it, or reinvent themselves.
These women taught me the art of survival: resilience in adversity, self-reliance, frugality. Through them — my grandmother, my aunts, my mother — I learned lessons which are not taught in school, values which have sustained me throughout my life. These women’s down-to-earth values have new relevance today, in a world preoccupied by appearances and material gain. By looking at my family’s collective past, I see clues for a better future. If we want a better world, we could do worse than turn to a few old-fashioned values and work at putting them into practice.
The book is a tribute to the precious heritage I received from people who lived and loved fully, and for whom everyday life was a celebration. I hope they will inspire many.

About the Author

Born in France to a Russian family, Anne Nenarokoff-Van Burek has lived in Toronto most of her adult life, and worked as a writer in both English and French. After spending 8 years as a radio and television news editor for Radio-Canada, Anne has authored numerous dramatic scripts for TVOntario/TFO, and Théâtre français de Toronto.
In collaboration with Bernard St-Asz, Anne wrote Le Mudra du Cœur, an account of his spiritual journey in the Tibetan community. (Louise Courteau éditrice, Montréal).
In 2000, Anne reconnected with her mother tongue, Russian, to do a theatrical adaptation of Dostoevsky’s White Nights, which was staged to great acclaim in Toronto, Montréal and Ottawa. The following year, she produced Duos, a multi-disciplinary performance of her poetry, directed by Guillaume Bernardi. Her latest play, Cœur de Chien/Heart of a Dog, adapted from the novel by Mikhaïl Bulgakov, was produced by Théâtre français de Toronto and Pleiades Theatre.
Anne’s first collection of poems, Vies de Femme and Confidences was published by Éditions du GREF in 2001. She has done several public readings at Théâtre français de Toronto and the Festival des Trois in Montréal. She is currently working on another collection of poetry.
