Overview

Ariane, jeune fille russe is a 1920 novel by the French writer Claude Anet. It follows a young Russian woman who encounters Don Juan and falls in love with him.

The novel has been adapted into film several times. In 1931 the German film Ariane was made, with an English-language version The Loves of Ariane and a French Ariane, jeune fille russe. All three were directed by Paul Czinner and two starred Elisabeth Bergner. In 1957 Billy Wilder adapted the novel for his American film Love in the Afternoon.

Claude Anet, né Jean Schopfer (Morges (Suisse), 28 mai 1868 — Paris, 9 janvier 1931), est un écrivain français, journaliste et joueur de tennis, vainqueur en 1892 du championnat de France international de tennis. Romancier, il est l'auteur de Ariane, jeune fille russe et de Mayerling, tous deux plusieurs fois adaptés au cinéma.

Jean Schopfer (born May 28, 1868, Morges, Switzerland – died January 9, 1931, Paris, France) was a tennis player competing for France, and a writer, known under the pseudonym of Claude Anet. He reached two singles finals at the Amateur French Championships, winning in 1892 over British player Fassitt, and losing in 1893 to Laurent Riboulet.
Educated at the Sorbonne and the École du Louvre, Schopfer started writing in 1899. Under the name of Claude Anet, Schopfer published many books, among which La Révolution Russe, written after a trip to Russia during World War I, Mayerling, based on the Mayerling Incident, or Simon Kra, a biography of tennis player Suzanne Lenglen.

His 1920 novel Ariane, jeune fille russe has been adapted into a number of films including Ariane and Love in the Afternoon.
