Description: The Elsevier Clinics Collection is a series of focused monographs based upon previously published articles appearing in the Clinics of North America series and Elsevier's Clinic Review Articles. This book collects articles about asthma from these databases.
Purpose: The purpose is to bring together in one place the most recent, pertinent, evidence-based information on the diagnosis and treatment of asthma.
Audience: This is a presentation of different considerations about asthma that primary care clinicians may take into account in their daily practice. The breadth of the information makes the monograph valuable for nurses and other medical professionals as well, giving them a broader picture than they may already have.
Features: The majority of the chapters are articles published in 2012 and 2013, with a few from 2014. The articles move through epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment along with specific considerations of alternative medicines. As the specialties of pediatrics and occupational medicine have specific areas of concern related to asthma, the articles also address many of these aspects. An interesting facet of this book is the focus on the role of the otolaryngologist in the treatment of patients with asthma. The book has no index, which does not affect its value to readers.
Assessment: This is a thought-provoking approach, in contrast to the more traditional book on asthma, which highlights many new ideas in the diagnosis and treatment of this common complaint.
