Description: The third edition of this book displays an excellent balance between presenting the current knowledge on the immunologic mechanisms causing these skin diseases and providing invaluable clinical information in diagnosing and caring for these patients. Although there is not an abundance of color clinical photographs, the ones that are included are high quality and illustrate the characteristic skin findings in sufficient detail for diagnostic purposes. Numerous tables summarize therapies and diagrams outline receptor interactions involved in pathogenesis.
Purpose: The purpose is to update dermatologists on the immunologic pathways contributing to autoimmune diseases with skin manifestations and how to direct therapy based on regulating and modifying these pathways.
Audience: The audience is dermatologists and rheumatologists.
Features: The book achieves perfect balance in covering the nuances of various autoimmune skin manifestations and their medical management. The current appropriate laboratory testing, medications, and immunologic mechanisms of disease are discussed with clinicians in mind. Color photographs depict skin abnormalities and histopathology, and diagrams outline pathways contributing to the development of autoreactivity. There is extensive referencing throughout the book.
Assessment: This excellent book and should be a staple in the library of general dermatologists. It goes beyond a discussion of just skin findings and provides a strong understanding of the various organ systems that can be affected. There are terrific clinical tips on how to differentiate skin findings among similar autoimmune conditions. In a field that is rapidly changing, this book will always be in need. I highly recommend it if you are only going to have one book on the subject.
