Vanessa Clark is doing a research paper for one of her last classes – Psychology of Sex – before receiving her Bachelors' degree. Once she discovers the topic of BDSM, everything else pales in comparison. But where will she learn about it? The Internet has its limits, and Vanessa needs to talk to real-life practitioners of BDSM to really understand the lifestyle and write about it.

Will Astin, who serves as a dungeon master at a local BDSM club, doesn't expect to find a gorgeous, irresistible young woman when he agrees to a meet and greet with a college student as a favor to the club's owner. Even better, she's interested in learning about BDSM for what he suspects are more than scholarly reasons, and Will decides he's just the man to teach her about it, hopefully claiming her for his own.

Will and Vanessa begin a journey which teaches both of them there's more to BDSM than meets the eye. In the process, they grow closer, but when Will's job puts him in the line of fire – literally – their roles are reversed and Vanessa has to take charge. Can they handle the rapid shift in their burgeoning dynamic, or is their relationship doomed?

Awakening, Cassandra Carr Review from jeannie zelos book reviews This is classed as Erotica, and also BDSM, but it's not extreme in either genre, so if you're a romance lover don't let that put you off. I really enjoyed the story, though at one point in the last quarter I found Vanessa's behaviour very OTT, and didn't understand why she was doing it. I though she must have some other motive in mind but no, she really was just that Brattish that night and - I felt - very rude to both Will and his friend who'd been really supportive to her. That part just didn't fit well with me, but it is only a small part of the story and the rest seemed very real life. Will, he's a great guy, been burned before by a lady so he's very cautious and keeps his playing as just that, one offs at the club only. Nothing serious for him. He's got a tough job as a hostage negotiator so blowing off some steam after a job is essential, and this is the way it works for him. And for the Subs I guess ;-) as he's a Dom of the best type, one that's out to give them pleasure....Then he meets Vanessa. She's a mature student, 22 to his 31, and doing a paper on BDSM for her degree. It's something that interests her but she knows very little about it. She's come to the club for info and she and Will have an immediate attraction. I loved the way she mulled over the pyschology of BDSM – that's something I find interesting, just why people act as they do, why we all have different needs, how what happens in our pasts can affect how we act in the present, and what we need. Not just in the BDSM world but in everyday lives. Vanessa used her pyschology knowledge further on too, when something serious had happened, and she needed to know more about what to do and how to help. So its not just a romance, but one that touches on the actions and wants of two people one could find in everyday life. It's easy to relate to them, to understand why Will felt maybe he was too old and jaded for Vanessa, to empathisise when she was worrying about school, money, and what she needed to do next. They felt just like people we could know, and that meant I could put myself in their position and really get involved in the story. And Love wins out – and that a winner for me too... Stars: four – a beautiful romance with some extra spice and plot. ARc received via Netgalley.

This is not the first book I have ever read about BDSM relationships but it is by far the most educational  one! I loved every bit of this book! Not only does the author include information about BDSM terms  and how some things are done in a BDSM relationship, but intertwines all this information in a  romantic story. Vanessa learned a lot about the basics of BDSM from Will and even though she was leery about it she found herself wanting to try that lifestyle to a point. Will is a very patient Dom and wanted to take care of Vanessa in any way he could. But when it came time for him to accept help he had a hard time. He came to realize that he needed Vanessa in ways to help him face things  that were going on in his life. I laughed at times, almost cried at other times and even got mad in some spots! This book is definitely one that I will reread over and over again.

The only reason this book didn’t get a five star from me, was I felt the story moved to slow. The characters were wonderful to follow, so engaging and each brought something to the story that added the charm but I wanted more from them. I wanted less caution and more action so for that reason alone, I had to give it four stars instead of five. Vanessa Clark is a college student who is majoring in Psychology and taking a class this semester titled Psychology of Sex. She is going to have to write a paper that will be half of her grade but she struggles with the topics brought up in class. She is a strong young lady and when the right topic comes up, she grabs at the chance to research it and explore the world of BDSM. After watching many videos about the subject she decides to see if she can go see a club and watch the events first hand. Maybe they would even answer questions for her for the paper. She didn’t expect to meet Will Astin there and have her world turned upside down. Will is a hostage negotiator who knows a thing or two about the psychology of the human mind and has offered to do the interview with Vanessa. Rod is the owner to the club and Will’s good friend, they need to make sure Vanessa is indeed a college student there to write a paper, not some reporter who is going to gather the gossip of the club and publish it in some news rag. When Will meets Vanessa for the first time it is clear to him she is a natural submissive, yet one of the biggest brats he has ever met. Will is a Dom and takes on the challenge of answering Vanessa’s questions, even offering to show her some of the play scenes if she wants. What grew between them started out as a promising relationship, he agreed to go slow with Vanessa and she agreed to try to get out of her head and stop overthinking everything. They are an adorable couple together till he gets called out on a job and their world takes a turn for the worse. Will struggles after he recovers with his limitations and injuries. He is nothing without his job and his ability to dominate Vanessa. She proves just how strong she is at a young age by going face to face with him, pushing him to accept her help. I really enjoyed watching the two of them come full circle once again, but wished that we would have had more intensity between them. It felt like most of the book one was walking on egg shells with the other so they wouldn’t run away. I think both strong personalities could have stood for more in your face moments and fighting for their future, but over all I love how this book read. The author did a great job with explaining BDSM to any one new to this life style and did it with respect for not only the people involved but for the ones trying to learn. It was a brilliant way to teach the readers about BDSM yet not overwhelm them with a lot of intense BDSM scenes or talking down to the reader. I really recommend this book and will looking for more of Ms. Carr’s books to read. Reviewed by Tbird for Crystal’s Many Reviewers *Copy provided for honest review*

Awakening by Cassandra Carr is a contemporary romance containing BDSM elements.  This one is hard for me to review cause I really don't want to spoil the story for anyone because I really think this is one of those stories that makes it more worthwhile not knowing too much before reading the story.  Awakening starts out with college student Vanessa Clark deciding to write a term paper on BDSM so she does research at a local club.  She meets Will Astin, a member of the local club, who offers to show her the ropes (no pun intended ;-)).  They quickly form a relationship...a very hot and interesting relationship. But with life not everything is sunshine and roses and they face some hardships...which just made me enjoy the story even more.   I loved the story...the romance...the drama...and definitely the age gap. Even though it wasn't a huge age gap (in my opinion), I enjoyed it but then again I do have a thing for older men. Highly recommend this story!!!
