About the Author

Raised in a fundamentalist religious community, Anena Hansen left the church in her mid-20s, got married, got divorced, and ran away to Africa. In Kenya she wrote, drank, and alternated between joy and despair, with notable experiences ranging from chasing monkey out of the kitchen to adopting a baby—and of course there was that time she fell down a flight of stairs in front of a regiment of South Sudanese soldiers.

Sober since 2016 and back home in New Hampshire since 2019, Anena works in the field of trauma, is a recovery coach, and still writes.
