Allaby introduces general readers and, presumably, beginning students, though he does not say so, to most of the topics included under the general heading: earth sciences, physical resources, biosphere, biological resources, and environmental management. Each of the six chapters can be read independently, which makes for a certain degree of overlap. He has updated the 1996 first edition to incorporate new controversies, especially the debate over the safety and desirability of genetically modified foods; new information that has become available; and more web sites for deeper study.
