About the Author

I am a retired English teacher who got hooked on detective novels when I was an adolescent. Later on, during the 1980s, I began writing my own detective novels, all of them featuring a hard-boiled, unscrupulous character by the name of Brett Cornell.
Prospective readers may possibly need to be aware that the novels are written in a tongue-in-cheek style and are meant to be humorous in many respects, just so long as one doesn't take Brett and his outrageous attitudes and behavior too seriously.

This book is exactly the sort of thing you can read and thoroughly enjoy without even realizing where the time went. The plot isn't too complicated, but it's not important when you consider the overpowering personality of the main character, Brett Cornell. The man is crude, conceited, obnoxious- but sexy as hell and twice as funny! This is the second book in this series that I've read, and I can hardly wait to get started on another one. A fun read

Beach Bum Brett is book #8 in the “Brett Cornell Mysteries” series, but fortunately it doesn’t seem like these books have to be read in any particular order. Any pertinent information we need is very readily provided by our hero’s amusing version of things that happened. I think this guy needs to be on a TV show… he almost reminds me of those Jersey Shore guys, where their personalities are obnoxious but they are so entertaining you can’t help but love them. And the book is excellently written and with no editing issues I could see (always a nice bonus!) A few parts were overwritten and felt a bit heavy handed, but I suppose it’s par for the course with such a character and “tone” of the novel. I think I enjoyed the actual conversations with the characters as opposed to the all the narrative. But I will say I was surprised with how much I enjoyed reading it, and I’ll probably check out others in the series as well. Recommend for those who comedy and fun stories, but it is probably best suited for adults.

this series is great, and I like that even though the character of Brett is pretty much the same throughout the series, each book focuses on different time and place and events, so it’s okay to read each one on their own, or even out of order and you can still follow along just fine. And you will definitely like it unless you have no sense of humor at all! I can’t remember a time that I was laughing and chuckling out loud to myself so much while reading a book. My husband kept looking at me like I was nuts, and then I told him he’d have to read it next and he’s see what was so funny! But not only are these books funny, they actually have good plots and interesting characters (even beside our man Brett) that keeps you invested throughout the whole book. Love this series, and I think it deserves more attention.

I almost forgot how much I loved these books! Once again I read the whole thing in one evening because it’s just too much fun to put down, and you just HAVE to see how Brett will react to any situation… because it’s usually offensive and wrong and unexpected… but then at times things just work out his way! Although it amazes me that he manages to get ANY women the way he acts and talks to them. And there is plenty of action and it never gets boring at all. This isn’t the deepest of plots ever, but it is entertaining and makes for a fun, engrossing read. I actually recommend other books in the series as well, as they are just as good.

okay, wow… I had no real idea what to expect when starting this book, other than the description seemed a bit different than I’m used to when reading a detective/mystery… but I can’t think of one I’ve read one that was this funny… not sure if this is a new niche the author has created, but if so I must say I like it! You have to be in the right frame of mind, and appreciate it for what it is. Do not take the characters or the storyline too seriously. Have an open, non-judgmental mind and don’t try to judge Brett on his morals or his upstanding personality (he will lose and you will be annoyed). Instead appreciate his brand of what I call ‘serious-comedy’… it’s like he is funny without even trying to be. And while the plot on the description seemed a bit thin, I found it to be surprisingly well-thought out and intelligently executed. I will be looking for more of the Brett Cornell Mysteries for sure.

it’s been some time since I’ve read a Brett Cornell book, but once I started reading I quickly remembered how much I enjoyed this author’s unique style of writing and especially the outlandish humour of Brett. He is such a great character, you can’t help but love him (just ask him!) This book is no different from the others I read – it is well written, fast paced, and totally enjoyable with great wit and action. The chapter titles are hilarious. I just love the narrative ‘voice’ of the author/Brett, and as long as one has a great sense of humor and isn’t easily offended, then this is a very entertaining read.

When I read the blurb in the Making Connections Group, I just knew I needed to read this!! And I was totally REWARDED!!! This book was one of the FUNNIEST books I have ever read!! And there was a fair bit of mystery involved too!!! I found the writing so light and frothy that I finished the book in record time (=although the review is well beyond late, for which I truly apologise) I even ended up adding all the #BrettCornell books for review (There are 9 such hilarious and amazingly well written books!!) The story starts with Brett relaxing at the beach, far from the maddening crowd literally which is a result of his previous escapades. While Brett is sitting around, getting affection and attention, he lands himself in another mystery. A word about Brett, in the author’s own terms, he is, an unscrupulous bastard!! No Morals and the like!! And with ruggedly good looks, it isn’t too difficult to have a good time at the beach. I’d say for quite a while I did enjoy Brett’s outrageous behaviour and laughed out at his responses and how he drove everyone mad!! There was a point where I really did get annoyed though, of how absolutely shameless Brett can be!! The reason I’d picked the book was a mystery and there was no end to the loopy reveal of Brett’s shaggy adventures. But right when I was about to put the book away, the mystery came through. Mind you, this isn’t one of those glaring, hard core, drawing-in type mysteries, a simple cold blooded murder. But the characters and the ease with which Brett finally solves the mystery is nice to read!! I enjoyed this book for its hilarity and how the author made me laugh and smirk!! Although I wouldn’t exactly call this a mystery, it nevertheless prompted me to go and try all of the ‘Brett Cornell’ Series in the lookout for some serious laughs!!
