Adopting a shelter dog can come with many questions, but also endless love.

A little boy imagines what life was like for his new dog before he adopted him from a shelter. Maybe he had a boy who loved him, but the family had to move and couldn't keep him. Maybe he belonged to someone who didn't appreciate how mischievous puppies can be. Maybe he was treated badly, and now he can be shown all the love he's been missing. This boy wonders about all of these things, but maybe they don't matter. Because now, his dog is home.

Winner of the Humane Society KIND Children's Picture Book Award and the ASPCA Henry Bergh Children's Book Award, this touching story celebrates all who support, care for, and adopt shelter dogs.

A boy wonders what his dog¿s life was like before they adopted it from the animal shelter and why someone would give up such a good pet. The perfect book for anyone who has adopted a pet from an animal shelter, or is thinking of adopting one.

Beautiful book, especially for people who have lost a pet and are debating buying a new one. A little boy wonders who owned his puppy before they adopted him, and why anyone would give him away. Great pictures, wonderful story.

I bought this book to read during a pet unit (I'm a school librarian). It is wonderful in showing empathy for animals. The main character voices all thoughts you have when you adopt a rescue pet. I couldn't believe how good it was! It made me cry (and all my teachers)!

This book is absolutely wonderful for any family with children. It helps children realize the great pleasures and self-gratification of adopting a shelter animal. It teaches compassion and love for other beings and the good deed of adopting from a shelter in an easy and sweet read that even the youngest children can understand. As a shelter volunteer and a mother, all children should have the opportunity to read and share this book with loved ones - even their dogs!
