Overview

This second edition in the Biopsy Interpretation Series addresses biopsies of the uterine cervix and corpus (endometrium) all in one text. It provides a practical approach to the most common biopsies encountered by surgical pathologists. Normal histology, non-neoplastic conditions, and neoplasia of the cervix and uterine body are covered using up-to-date terminology and concepts. Emphasis is on morphologic features and immunohistochemistry in the diagnostic material. Ancillary tests such as in situ hybridization for HPV and molecular studies for microsatellite instability assessment and molar pregnancy will be included. Close attention is given to differential diagnoses, including benign mimics of tumors. New to this edition will be a section on section of metastatic tumors.

Description: This is a quick and concise reference on the particularly challenging scenarios encountered with gynecological biopsies, mostly due to loss of architectural patterns. The website enables users to download an electronic copy that includes search capability. Pages are cross linked and all important references are hyperlinked. Additional features include over 1,000 images and a 50-question test bank for board review. The previous edition was published in 2010.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a practical approach to the interpretation of specimens, updated with the most current references and information as the field continues to evolve. There is a strong emphasis on the differential diagnosis and the most frequent pitfalls. The online format offers even more high-detail photomicrographs with the ability to zoom in, in addition to an already great set of images.
Audience: The intended audience is surgical pathologists and pathology residents in training. The layout makes it easy to navigate, with chapters divided by specific regions within the gynecological system. Entities are organized from benign to malignant, and all contain common differential diagnoses with ways to distinguish among them. This format makes it a great reference to have around on sign-out days because of the great detailed photographs and how easy it is to find specific information in a timely manner.
Features: This is a comprehensive, concise reference for the most commonly seen entities in gynecological pathology. It starts with the basic normal histology (which provides a good benchmark) and goes through each anatomic region of the uterine corpus and cervix. Within each of these anatomic regions, condensed informative paragraphs describe benign and malignant entities and the distinguishing features between them. The information and detailed photographs are the most important features and key information about each entity that would need to be considered upon sign-out. This style is essential for any residents in training in pathology, allowing them to see and read the most important information at the scope.
Assessment: The books in the Biopsy Interpretation Series are great references with high quality material. The series provides a good starting point for trying to approach the unknown biopsy slide. This book is obviously not 100% comprehensive, but references are provided for further detailed reading. This edition contains more detailed photographs, which are essential to any pathology book, and updated background information from new studies.
