Description: This is an update of a book on family practice medicine last published in 2010.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a single-source reference for house staff and practicing family physicians. The editors and contributors meet this goal well.
Audience: As noted in the preface, the book is targeted at house staff and practicing family practice physicians. However, it also serves as a useful, overall reference for nursing and ancillary staff.
Features: The book is divided into areas of concentration such as infancy and childhood or adults with chapters on diagnoses like heart failure, movement disorders, and oral health. Each chapter consists of sections such as essentials of diagnosis, general considerations, pathogenesis, prevention, etc. The book uses a prose format with blocks directing readers to pertinent journal articles. Tables throughout the book highlight particular aspects of a diagnosis.
Assessment: Overall, this is a useful book that readers need to commit time to read through the chapters to extract the important facts.
