About the Author

Roberta Olsen Major wore out two toy typewriters as a child before her parents realized she needed the real thing. Throughout junior high and high school, she tapped out lurid, angst-filled stories peopled with impossibly beautiful characters speaking highly improbable dialogue.
Earning a BA from Brigham Young University, she worked for a time as a librarian in sensible shoes, before switching her Major to the care and feeding of a science-minded husband and two charming children.
A published playwright and reviewer of children's books, she now lives in Texas, where she tap dances, collects dust, and is, as always, working on her next book.

"The first thing we have to do," Bess said grimly, "is find someone to marry us."

"Marry us?" Ben winced. "Fine. You find someone to marry you and I'll find someone to marry me and we can all live happily ever after."

"I don't like it any better than you do," Bess snapped. "But if those militiamen had asked to see our marriage lines we'd've been uncovered."

"You already were."

Bess gritted her teeth. "If I hadn't been, you'd be in jail by now."

"She has it right, Ben." Ajani's voice was calm, but there was a cord of firmness running through it.

"I don't want to get married," Ben said with a definitely sulky look around his mouth.

"Well, damn it, neither do I, you sidewinder! So just get taken in and strung up and leave me in peace!" Bess whacked him with her hat, damaging it but only eliciting a snort and a puff of dust from him. And then she stomped off, her fist jabbing into the crown, ostensibly to reshape it, though, truth be told, it was beyond hope.
