This small volume covers a broad selection of topics in breast cancer, with an emphasis on new and controversial areas. The purpose is to serve as a bridge between the classic comprehensive textbook and a journal article, allowing the reader to remain current in a focused field. It is written for those who already have a significant background in breast disease, since many basics are not covered. This is a multi-authored text, and the quality of contributions is somewhat variable. The majority of the authors are from MD Anderson, and some of their contributions reflect an institutional approach rather than the wider scope of published literature. The topics addressed include practical issues such as specimen evaluation and long term follow up, current controversies such as genetics and sentinel node biopsy, and experimental approaches such as laser ablation and cryosurgery. The book is well illustrated with tables, diagrams, and x-rays. It is most successful in its focused reviews of well-defined topics such as breast MRI or skin sparing mastectomy. Larger topics such as surgery for invasive and noninvasive cancer and adjuvant chemotherapy, and prognostic factors are less well-addressed in this brief format. This book will be most useful to the physician specializing in breast cancer who has a library of major textbooks and uses this to review selected topics of interest.
