B'ville, A musician's homecoming story
Dooley Blake has just turned 40. He is facing an identity crisis and his conscience is plagued with guilt. Five years earlier, he left B’ville after feeling emasculated by a humiliating divorce that stripped him of his property and parental rights. He rode his Harley west to San Francisco, California to accept a job as a mandolin player with a bluegrass band. In order to keep up his child support payments, Dooley is forced to leave music and take on work as a bounty hunter and then as a private investigator chasing down witnesses. After one of these witnesses is brutally murdered, Dooley is blamed and forced to leave San Francisco.

Returning home, Dooley receives a cool reception from his mother, Flora Blake, a shrewd, hardworking business woman with a strong religious faith. Dooley learns from his mother that his teenage son, Andy, had a fistfight with his stepfather, Lance Butler, who accused the boy of making advances. Dooley learns soon afterward that his son is gay. Dooley’s homecoming becomes more contentious after he uncovers some shocking secrets about his father’s past life and how they intertwine with small town racism and bigotry.

During a confrontation with his son, Dooley discovers that Andy has prodigious talent as a musician. Dooley manages to find some common ground with Andy through their shared love of playing music. They set out on a father/son odyssey to New York City so Andy can have his shot at a competition to win a music school scholarship. During their journey, Dooley makes important discoveries about his son, his father and himself that lead to a life changing set of experiences.

About the Author

John Sheehan’s seventh and latest novel, B’ville, A musician’s homecoming story, represents a creative tour de force for the author, who has devoted most of his life to creative pursuits. John combines the elements of master storytelling with poetic musical lyrics and a visual setting of the town of B’ville, to create a unique reading experience that stimulates all the senses.

John recorded the development of the B’ville cover illustration from the initial pencil drawing to finished painting. This display can be found at http://sfbookcraftsman.hubpages.com/ under the title: How to invent a town: The making of B’ville.

John Sheehan lived in Franklin, Tennessee, from 1975 to 1984. That chapter in his life provided the background knowledge from which the town and story of B’ville was created. He worked as the Art Director of Music City News, a country music fan and trade magazine from 1978 to 1983. During his years working for MCN, he had the honor to meet many of the great legends of the country music business such as Chet Atkins and Bill Monroe. John worked in the trenches with the people of the country music industry which offered him valuable insight into the culture of the south and the country music business that color the pages of B’ville.

For those readers who enjoy historical fiction, please make sure to browse through John Sheehan’s previous work that includes the 5 star rated, 4 volume, Billy’O epic, an emigrant’s odyssey spanning the Gold Rush era to the American Civil War. His five star rated Edgar’s Window, a quirky murder mystery set in Greenwich village featuring the specter of Edgar Allan Poe, and Dark Sabbath, a lurid mystery tale set during the great SF earthquake of 1865.

John currently lives in San Diego, California, where he divides his time between writing, managing his publishing imprint and painting in and out of his studio. For additional information about John’s background, please visit his Facebook page.
