Overview

This recording features music by Paul Lansky ("As If" for string trio and computer-synthesized sound), Larry Austin ("Montage: Themes and Variations for Violin and Computer Music on Tape" [1985]), and John Melby ("Concerto No. 1 for Flute and Computer-Synthesized Tape" [1984]). Also included are David Rosenboom's "A Precipice in Time" (1966), a unique blend of "free jazz," live "phantom doubles" (computer resynthesis of acoustic instruments), and graphed structure, and an excellent performance of Anthony Braxton's 1982 "Composition No. 107 (Excerpt)," a "dry and glass-like sound universe" punctuated with high-energy improvisation. Braxton has taken the "graph score" to a new level for his compositions involving a combination of spontaneous and charted playing, and has extended his imagination into the future -- like Charles Ives in his "Universe Symphony" to be played from mountaintops -- to pieces to be played from planet to planet. ~ "Blue" Gene Tyranny
