Overview

Engineer Sol Brooks is a happily married man, so people keep telling him. He and Elise have been in Boston for eight years, he loves her, and she loves him. They've got a great apartment that's kept its value, they're both up for promotion, and he can hook up with any guy he likes-all the sex he wants, so long as it's of the "no strings" variety.

And that's all fine and dandy...
until a chance meeting at the checkout.

. . .

This isn't a fluffy m/m filled with stupid misunderstandings...this is a book about the cost of being truly grown up; not in a YA coming of age, but in a turning over a whole new chapter way, complete with love and loss. Excellent read.

...wonderful and refreshing and just laugh out loud funny at times.

A powerfully written, life changing book.
A beautiful read.

I had a major problem with this book. Should I keep reading so I could find out what happens to this couple, or should I slow down so there are still chapters left to read and I don't finish it too quickly. When I saw the title and the cover photo, I figured Checking Him Out would be the typical short, meet-have sex-end of story type of book very often found in this gay erotic category. How wrong I was. This was actually a complete novel, and although not the length of Gone with the Wind, it told an interesting, romantic and compelling tale of two people thrown together by chance who end up happy in the end. This is Sol's story, and I fell into his life and his on-again, off-again (or partially off) relationship with Adam. The characters were lifelife, well-drawn, and even the supporting characters were realistic. Unlike many books, the writing was strong, the dialogue well-written and believeable. Perhaps the ending had a bit of a fairy-tale quality, but I am a sucker for that and was quite happy how it all turned out (although sad to say goodbye to these two). I don't want to go into plot details here as you can read the novel and hopefully immerse yourself into it as I did. I rarely give five stars in my reviews but Checking Him Out deserves that rating. I only wish the title and cover were different so that the book would stand out from the crowd of far lesser books that it resembles on first glance. Read it.

This story shows that sometimes revenge can be sweet. The author does a super job of letting her readers deleve into and relate to the lives of the characters.
