Description: This primer on the art of chest x-ray interpretation is not meant as an exhaustive guide, but rather as a source of information on the basic, systematic approach to interpreting a chest radiograph. An electronic version of the book is available as a free download with the supplied redemption code. The previous edition was published in 2009.
Purpose: The focus is on introducing key concepts in how to look at a chest x-ray, starting from the often-overlooked critical step of checking the patient name and demographics to ensure that the correct film is being reviewed. The authors approach the films from the standpoint of a nonradiologist and assume that readers have no prior experience with film interpretation. They provide a systematic approach to identifying normal structures, finding abnormalities, and understanding what the abnormality may represent. With this edition, the authors have improved image quality and added new material.
Audience: The authors identify a primary audience of medical students, a group for which this work is well suited. It is at a basic level that makes it easy for students to follow and builds upon their expected clinical knowledge and knowledge of pathology. Its well-written, step-by-step approach leads them through the thought process of image review and interpretation. The authors are from the U.K. and appear to be well versed in this material.
Features: The authors detail a systematic process to identify normal anatomic structures in the chest on both radiography and CT. The images are of high quality and are nicely annotated with arrows and captions. The book flows well from anatomy to recognizing abnormal findings and providing a differential diagnosis. It is at a very good level for novices in interpreting films and makes all of the salient teaching points. The section on radiographic anatomy and localizing where in the lung a pathological process sits is particularly strong and should be read by all medical students and first year radiology residents.
Assessment: This is an excellent resource for medical students and first year radiology residents. A very appealing feature is the self-assessment chapter at the end of the book. This is of great potential benefit for residency programs to test their junior residents' knowledge. The web-based full-text version and the small print version make this a very desirable pocket companion for medical students on rounds.
