Strange things happen to fifteen-year-old Lavida Mors. Maybe that's why her father sends her away to Portal Manor, a mysterious family estate she never knew existed. Lavida quickly discovers that not everything at Portal Manor is as it seems when she stumbles across a secret passage to a hidden world - Anaedor.

Populated by strange and powerful, supposedly mythical, creatures, Anaedor has descended into a world of turmoil and anarchy. It is a realm on the verge of war, and an evil being seeks to seize control while chaos rules. To do so, the power-hungry fiend must eliminate the One, whom the Prophecies predict will destroy the evil of Anaedor. Unfortunately for Lavida, there are those who believe she is the One.

On the order of the evil creature, the enigmatic and dangerous Frio takes Lavida and her friends captive, forcing them to stand trial for crimes against the citizens of Anaedor. In attempting to escape the dark forces of this volatile world, Lavida is compelled to make a terrible choice: reveal a secret she has harbored nearly all her life or let her friends die.

About the Author

When author, Kristina Schram, was growing up she wanted to be a star. When that didn't turn out quite like she expected, she turned her mind to achieving other goals: Earning her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, working as an Artist-in-Residence at local schools, being a free-lance editor and reader, coaching parks & rec basketball, and publishing her first novel, a YA fantasy called The Chronicles of Anaedor: The Prophecies (Book One).

Knowing what it's like to struggle with self-doubt and lack of confidence, her biggest dream (in addition to owning a castle) is to stamp out low self-esteem for everyone, especially young people. "Feeling bad about yourself is the number one deterrent to achieving happiness," she says. "So for the sake of a better world, it's got to go." She lives in New Hampshire with her husband, three boys, her mother and various pets, and can also throw a tomahawk, if need be. This YA fantasy genre book is the story of Lavida Mors who is sent by her Dad to an old family home to attend a nearby public school. There she discovers Anaedor, a world underground populated with strange beings. An old prophecy links her closely with the fate of that world, telling of somebody with her name being the One, a person with special powers to lead the world of Anaedor into the age-old fight between good and evil. The story is fun. The creatures Lavida meets in the caves and tunnels are loosely based on our magical fairytales, changed slightly into something darker and more dangerous, sometimes nearly human, sometimes quite demonic but always with a pinch of humour. Two friends of Lavida get trapped underground with her and the trio enters the world of magical adventure together, starting the battle against the forces that are trying to take over the dark world and killing Lavida to stop her from fulfilling the prophecy. This book is well written and fast paced, pure fun to get immersed in. The Trolls, Blendars, Amorals and all the other strange and wonderful creatures are well described and appear thoroughly real, the world above is here and now, somewhere in today¿s America and not once does the narrative leave us confused. There are no holes and no edges in the flow of the tale; I enjoyed every page of it. It is easy to read without being simple, nothing too frightening ¿ just the right amount of thrill. With more books in the series this could help fill the gap in the young adult literary world that the end of Harry Potter left.

Just as Alice falls down the rabbit hole and finds a wonderland, so does Lavida Mors find a buried world hidden from earthly eyes just below her feet. This book is the first in what I hope is a long series of books telling the tales of Anaedor. Anaedor is a wonderful world filled with all of those mythical creatures we were told do not exist but really do. Lavida finds herself the key to the survival of these wild and strange creatures. She does not want this responsibility but as in all great adventures, she has no choice. She only hopes that she, and her friends, will live through it!

I met the author while at B&N purchasing the new S.King novel last winter. I did not think that The Chronicles of Anaedor was for me, not sure why, but I guess I thought it would have too many adolescent characters and/or too many talking animals. How wrong I was! This story started as a mystery. I found myself looking forward to what was around the next corner with the characters that I got to know, and those who I knew were coming. They were fun, curious, busy, well descripted, and the "others" I could picture in my mind. The story moved at a good clip and I am looking forward to the next book. Nicely done. Nice fantasy woven into the real world.

The Chronicles of Anaedor: The Prophecies is a YA Fantasy book, but it was different than any I've read before. The author has her own, unique voice that spices up the characters and dialogue making this book a fun, exciting read. The main character, Lavida Mors, is a fifteen-year-old girl who is sent away to a family estate, Portal Manor, by her dad. She hopes that maybe she can start over in this new place, but she has a secret that has already screwed things up for her once. During the story, she discovers a hidden, underground world full of strange beings. One of them kidnaps her and her friends (twins, Eddie and Ellie, who is one of my favorite characters) and takes them to be put on trial. They manage to escape from the prisons where they are being held captive and in the ensuing chase, Lavida is forced to reveal her secret, at the risk of losing everything she has gained in this new life. There's a lot of adventure in this book and though it starts a little slow, it really picks up and ends with a bang. Can't wait to see what else Ms. Schram has in store for the world of Anaedor (according to her website, which is actually kind of cool - watch her 2 book trailers and you'll see what I mean - there are 3 more books to the series).

A standing ovation for Kristina Schram's new book The Chronicles of Anaedor: The Prophecies. Experience fantasy at its best as you journey along with the beguiling heroine (Lavida) and her comical sidekick Ms. Penny (a raccoon). Mystery and danger await her at spooky Portal Manor, where there are more than ghosts that go bump in the night! The vivid descriptions and creative characters all but leap off the page, as you lose yourself in the enchanting realm of Anaedor. Lavida's fears make her all that more real and endearing, yet she is able to overcome and triumph! Three thumbs up and that's one more than I have. -Donna Marie Waters Author of The Gnome Chronicles: Bracken and the Crystal Cave & The Dragons of Middle Earth
