Information presented in Clin Alert involves newly published data in the following areas: adverse drug reactions; drug interactions; and notifications and health advisories from the food and drug administration (FDA). The purpose is to update healthcare professionals on newly published drug interactions, adverse drug reactions, and notifications and health advisories from the FDA. The target audience includes pharmacists and all healthcare professionals involved in patient care. This book is divided into the following chapters: alternative medicines, antihistamines, anti-infectives, anti-neoplastics, autonomic agents, blood, cardiac, central nervous system, eyes/ears/nose/throat, electrolyte, gastrointestinal, hormones, and miscellaneous. Each report has a title that provides a brief explanation of the case followed by a brief summary of the events and references. The indexes, drug, FDA/Manufacturer alert, first published reports, legal action and drug interaction index, provide multiple mechanisms to locate desired information. This book serves as a review of the previously published Clin Alert newsletter over an undefined, two year time period. Advantages of the reference include provision of useful information, well-referenced material, and the inclusion of herbal medications. Disadvantages include: the time period to which the information covers is not clearly defined; information is limited to only that which was published in Clin Alert newsletters; it is not a comprehensive collection of information on adverse drug reactions and interactions; and theindexes are not user friendly. References such as Stockley's Drug Interactions: A Source Book of Adverse Interactions, Their Mechanisms, Clinical Importance and Management, 5th Edition (APhA, 1999), and Davies' Textbook of Adverse Drug Reactions (Oxford University Press, 1991) provide a more comprehensive listing of adverse drug reactions and drug interactions.
